Heavy late-summer storms that moved through Douglas County on Saturday left lasting impacts at Castlewood Canyon State Park, prompting Colorado Parks and Wildlife to close the park's entire trail system until further notice and to shut the west side of the park after roadway erosion.
Park access limited after rapid rainfall and erosion
The closures were announced by Colorado Parks and Wildlife late Saturday. Officials said damage from fast-moving floodwaters and erosion made trails and bridges unsafe, so the agency ordered the entire trail network at the park near Franktown to remain closed while crews assess conditions.
Park managers also closed the park's western entrance after portions of South Castlewood Canyon Road were washed away by the storm runoff. A photograph released by the agency showed standing water and evidence of recent flooding within the canyon.
