Two people have been charged and four more arrested in connection with an incident in Avonmouth on 31 July that left one ship worker in a critical condition and another requiring hospital treatment before being discharged. Avon and Somerset Police have said the matter is being treated as a suspected hate crime.
Charges and custody status
A 45-year-old man from Southmead has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to the victim who remains seriously ill in hospital. He was remanded and is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court on Friday 4 September.
Separately, a 17-year-old male has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm concerning the second man who has since been discharged. As a juvenile he cannot be identified in the press and will next appear at court on the same date as the other defendant.
Other arrests and investigation progress
Police say a total of six people have been arrested during the course of enquiries. Four of those remain on conditional bail while investigations continue. The force has not disclosed whether further charges are being considered.
- 31 July – a 19-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder; placed on conditional bail.
- 1 August – a 38-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender; placed on conditional bail.
- 13 August – an 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder; released on conditional bail.
- 14 August – a 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder; released on conditional bail.
Acting Detective Inspector Kate Bettel, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said the arrests had resulted in two people being charged and brought to court as enquiries progress.
"Six arrests have been made as part of our enquiries, and that has led to two of those people being charged and appearing in court," the officer said.
Local impact and police reassurance
The incident occurred in Richmond Terrace in the Avonmouth area at about 8.30pm on 31 July and involved workers from ships operating in the port. Police described the scene as having left residents and those close to the victims "shocked", and have sought to reassure the community that enquiries are ongoing.
Officers have provided limited detail about the circumstances that led to the confrontation while the investigation remains active. Recording the incident as a suspected hate crime indicates the force is treating elements of motive or targeting as part of its enquiries; however, no trial or conviction has yet taken place, and suspects are entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The force has said it will continue to issue "key updates" as enquiries progress and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Victim support provision and liaison with those affected have been referenced by investigators as part of their response, but detailed descriptions of injuries or the wider circumstances have been withheld while the investigation continues.
The next significant date in the criminal process is the scheduled hearing at Bristol Crown Court on 4 September for the defendant remanded from custody; the juvenile charged will also appear before the court on that date. Further legal steps will depend on the outcome of police enquiries and the decisions of the Crown Prosecution Service regarding any additional charges.
As the matter remains under active investigation, reporting restrictions apply to the identification of the juvenile and the usual legal protections around presumption of innocence remain in force for those charged but not convicted.
