Torrent Group to invest over ₹43,000 crore in MP for thermal, pumped storage and wind projects

Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group will invest more than ₹43,000 crore in Madhya Pradesh, including a 1,600 MW thermal plant in Anuppur, a 1,500 MW pumped storage project in Chhindwara and a 250 MW wind scheme in Ratlam–Ujjain, officials said.

Bhopal: Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group is planning investments of more than ₹43,000 crore in Madhya Pradesh across thermal, pumped storage and wind energy projects, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said after a meeting with Torrent officials in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Major projects, staged investments

Officials said the proposals include a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Anuppur with an estimated cost of around ₹22,000 crore. A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for this project was signed with Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) on 27 January 2026. Land acquisition for the plant has been completed and work orders have been awarded to reputed contractors including L&T and Tata Projects, the state government said. Clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is already in place and pre-construction activities are underway at the site.

To expand energy storage and renewable capacity, Torrent is developing the 1,500 MW Patalkot Pumped Storage Project in Chhindwara, with a proposed investment of ₹7,500 crore. In addition, the group is advancing a 250 MW wind energy project across Ratlam and Ujjain, expected to cost about ₹2,000 crore. Torrent already operates a 36 MW wind power unit in Mandsaur.

Employment and energy security implications

The state government put the combined employment potential from these projects at over 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. Of these, the Anuppur thermal project alone is expected to generate approximately 7,000 jobs, the pumped storage project about 4,000, and the wind initiative roughly 500 positions, officials said.

Dr. Yadav described the investments as aimed at meeting the state’s growing energy demand and strengthening baseload capacity to make Madhya Pradesh more self-reliant in power supply. The mix of large-scale thermal capacity alongside pumped storage and wind projects reflects an approach that couples conventional baseload additions with grid-level storage and renewable generation.

Administration and stakeholders

Senior state officials accompanying the Chief Minister for discussions included Additional Chief Secretary (Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion) Neeraj Mandloi, Secretary John Kingsley and MPIDC Managing Director Chandramauli Shukla. Torrent Power Limited Chairman Samir Mehta led the company delegation.

  • Investment announced: Over ₹43,000 crore across projects in the state.
  • Key projects: 1,600 MW thermal (Anuppur), 1,500 MW pumped storage (Chhindwara), 250 MW wind (Ratlam–Ujjain).
  • Employment: Estimated 15,000+ direct and indirect jobs.

Project summary

Project Capacity Estimated investment District Estimated jobs
Ultra-supercritical thermal power 1,600 MW ~₹22,000 crore Anuppur ~7,000
Patalkot Pumped Storage Project 1,500 MW ~₹7,500 crore Chhindwara ~4,000
Wind energy project 250 MW ~₹2,000 crore Ratlam, Ujjain ~500

Context and local impact

Madhya Pradesh has been expanding both generation and renewable capacity to manage rising demand from urban centres and industrial consumers. The addition of a large ultra-supercritical thermal plant would bolster baseload supply, while the pumped storage scheme could provide grid flexibility to accommodate variable renewable output and peak load needs.

Local economies around project sites may see ancillary benefits through construction-linked employment, supply-chain activity and infrastructure development. The state’s industrial promotion body, MPIDC, will be involved in coordinating clearances and facilitation, officials said.

Next steps

With environmental clearance for the thermal plant reportedly in place and the PPA signed, mobilisation and major construction works are expected to progress quickly. State officials indicated that pre-construction activities were already in progress at the Anuppur site.

Further details on timelines, staged investments and procurement are likely to be announced as contractors commence major works and as the company and state finalise implementation schedules.
