Ranchi: Asim Mandal, also known by several aliases including Akash, a Central Committee member of the CPI (Maoist) with a combined bounty of ₹2.20 crore placed by the Jharkhand and Odisha governments, has surrendered in West Bengal, Jharkhand police officials confirmed on Thursday.
Background and surrender
Officials said Mandal — a resident of Uttar Phulchuk village in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal — gave himself up to the authorities. Jharkhand had announced a reward of ₹1 crore for information leading to his arrest while Odisha had placed a bounty of ₹1.20 crore on him.
Security records list nearly 55 serious criminal cases registered against Mandal across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, many involving attacks on security personnel and armed encounters. Jharkhand police said the surrender followed efforts by multiple agencies to track his movements.
Incidents linked to Mandal
Officials highlighted several episodes in which Mandal has been implicated. A table summarises the incidents that security records associate with him:
| Date | Location | Reported outcome |
|---|---|---|
| March 1, 2026 | Marangponga, Chotanagra police station area, Chaibasa | Two security personnel injured, including an Assistant Commandant of 209 CoBRA |

Interrogation and expected outcomes
Security agencies in Jharkhand and West Bengal said Mandal is being questioned to gather actionable intelligence about the Maoist organisation's local structure, movement corridors, hideouts and locations used to store arms and explosives. Officials expect information from his interrogation could help locate concealed caches in the Saranda forests and adjacent tracts, and identify collaborators or cadres operating in the Kolhan and Saranda belts.
Police sources indicated that confirming and verifying leads provided by Mandal will be prioritised before operations are planned. Investigators will cross-check his statements against available field intelligence and forensic evidence recovered from previous encounters.
Operational significance
Security officials described Mandal as an active organiser in parts of Jharkhand where Maoist presence has persisted for years. With a leadership role at the Central Committee level, his surrender may yield both tactical information about arms and ammunition dumps and strategic insight into the group's local command-and-control arrangements.
- Judicial process: Mandal remains subject to cases registered in Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal; formal charges and custody will follow legal procedure.
- Intelligence follow-up: Agencies will seek to corroborate his disclosures before mounting recovery or disruption operations.
- Security posture: Forces operating in the Kolhan and Saranda areas may adjust deployments based on the intelligence obtained.
Regional implications
Analysts of counter-insurgency operations say the surrender of a senior leader can affect morale within an underground network and provide a window for authorities to press the advantage. However, officials caution that information from a single surrender must be validated carefully and that residual cadres can still mount attacks if not effectively disrupted.
Jharkhand police confirmed they will coordinate with counterparts in Odisha and West Bengal to pursue leads across state borders and to ensure that pending cases are processed as per law. The handover or movement of custody where required will follow inter-state protocols.
Authorities have not released other operational details pending the completion of interrogations and further verification of Mandal's disclosures.
