Fatal attack in Mengate locality raises safety concerns
HAZARIBAG: A Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) employee was allegedly attacked and killed at his residence in the Mengate area under Giddi police station late on Saturday night, police said on Sunday. The victim, identified as Mangalesh Pal alias Happy (30), who worked as a data entry operator at CCL’s Amrapali project, was found with severe injuries to the head, neck and abdomen, and a severed right hand, officials said.
According to the statement recorded by police from the victim’s wife, the assailants entered the house wearing masks and overpowered the couple before fleeing with gold ornaments. Authorities have registered an investigation and deployed a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team and a dog squad to collect evidence.
"Happy had been receiving repeated phone calls for the past two days and appeared worried. He had told her that the calls were related to his duty," the wife told investigators, according to the police.
Police said neighbours raised the alarm after hearing the woman banging at the main door. A local youth climbed over the boundary wall and opened the gate, after which residents freed her and alerted the Giddi police. The victim was discovered in an inner room and later pronounced dead, police added.

Context and local impact
The victim had returned home recently after treatment for a fractured leg sustained while playing volleyball on October 5; he had been hospitalised for about 10 days and had come back with his leg in plaster three days before the attack, according to the wife's account recorded by police. The couple's account that the victim had been receiving repeated, worrying phone calls in the days prior is being examined by investigators.
While detectives work to establish motive and identify the assailants, residents have demanded increased patrolling and prompt action from the district administration. The involvement of masked intruders and the apparent targeting of jewellery have not yet been conclusively linked by police to a robbery motive; investigators say they are keeping several lines of inquiry open.
Officials have appealed to anyone with information, CCTV footage or mobile-phone recordings from the area around the time of the incident to come forward. The Giddi police station is handling the case and will release further details as the probe progresses.
At this stage, no arrests have been announced.
