Police probe after couple immolate themselves in Lohardaga
Lohardaga, Jharkhand: A newly married pair died after setting themselves on fire in Dhanamunji village in Lohardaga district on Saturday, police said on Sunday. The victims have been identified as Ajit Oraon, 25, and his wife Balmiki Oraon, 20, according to the Bhandara police.
Officials said the couple locked the room from inside, wrapped themselves in a blanket, poured petrol and set it alight. Family members noticed the blaze, forced the door open and found both badly burned. The two were rushed to the Bhandara community health centre, where Ajit was declared dead.
Balmiki was later transferred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries during treatment, the police added. The Bhandara police station in-charge, Manoj Gupta, told investigators that mental stress is being considered as a possible motive. A formal case has been registered and further inquiries are underway.
Bodies found on tracks in Jamtara; relationship reportedly opposed by families
Jamtara, Jharkhand: In a separate incident on the same day, two young people from Ringochingo village were found dead on railway tracks in Karmatand police station area. The deceased were identified as Rocky Kumar Mandal, 20, and Nazia Khatoon, 17, police said.
Officer-in-charge Alakh Chaubey said the couple had left home on Friday night to go to a fair and later visited a temple. A photograph of the two was recovered from Rocky’s mobile phone. Chaubey said preliminary inquiries indicate the deaths are likely suicide, and that the families were not accepting the relationship.
"Preliminary investigation suggests it to be a suicide case as the families were not ready to accept their relationship," said Alakh Chaubey.
The bodies were handed over to relatives after completion of post-mortem formalities, police said. Karmatand police are continuing investigations to establish the exact sequence of events and corroborating evidence.
Investigations under way; police actions and next steps
In both districts, investigators have recorded statements from family members and neighbours and are examining physical evidence. In the Lohardaga case, forensic teams are expected to analyse burn patterns and any accelerant traces. In Jamtara, railway authorities and the local police are coordinating to review CCTV and witness accounts from the area around the tracks.
Police emphasised that while early findings point to self-inflicted death in both incidents, formal conclusions will follow completion of medico-legal reports, autopsy findings and statements from witnesses and family members.
Local impact and social context
The two episodes, occurring within the same 24-hour period, have raised concerns in local communities about young couples facing familial opposition and the pressures that may drive vulnerable persons to take extreme steps. Authorities in both districts said the matters will be probed thoroughly to determine any culpability of third parties or failures in preventing the tragedies.
- Incident 1 (Lohardaga): Self-immolation inside house; both victims later died in hospital.
- Incident 2 (Jamtara): Bodies found on railway tracks; relationship reportedly opposed by families; case treated as suspected suicide.
- Investigations: Police have registered cases and are awaiting forensic and medico-legal reports.
Police have urged anyone with information related to either incident to come forward to help establish the circumstances. Community leaders and local administration sources said they will monitor the inquiries and counselling support for affected families.
