Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday reviewed preparations for the Khelo India Youth Games 2026 at the Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resource Development Institute of Telangana (MCRHRD) in Hyderabad, according to an official release.
Meeting participants and administrative oversight
Present at the meeting were Minister for Sports Vakiti Srihari, Government Advisor Ramakrishna Rao, Sports Authority of Telangana (SATG) Chairman Shivasena Reddy, Special Chief Secretary (Sports) Jayesh Ranjan and SATG Managing Director Sony Bala Devi, the release said. The review covered logistics, venue readiness, athlete accommodation, transport and security measures as the state prepares to host the eighth edition of the national youth multi-sport event.
When and what to expect
The Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2026 are expected to take place in November 2026. Telangana will be the second southern state in three years to host the Games, following Tamil Nadu which staged the 2024 edition, the release noted.
Recent KIYG context and Telangana’s past performance
The release summarised results and features of recent editions: Bihar hosted the 2025 edition in May, while Tamil Nadu held the 2024 Games. In the 2025 KIYG medal table, Maharashtra, Haryana and Rajasthan finished first, second and third respectively; host Bihar ranked 15th and Telangana placed 13th. At the 2024 KIYG in Tamil Nadu, Telangana finished sixth.
| Edition | Host | Telangana position | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 (7th) | Tamil Nadu | 6th | Second place: Tamil Nadu; overall winners: Maharashtra |
| 2025 (8th) | Bihar | 13th | Featured 28 sports; e-sports as demonstration |

Sporting programme and records cited
The Bihar 2025 edition featured 28 sports, with medals awarded in 27 of them and e-sports included as a demonstration sport, the release said. That edition saw 26 records set, including 13 national youth records — all in weightlifting — while the remainder were meet records in athletics. The Telangana review discussed aligning the state’s schedule and technical arrangements with the national body’s standards.
Local impact and infrastructure focus
Hosting the Games will require coordination across city and district administrations, sports federations, and the SATG. The review meeting at MCRHRD emphasised:
- Venue readiness and upgrades to meet national technical specifications
- Accommodation and athlete village planning, including transport links
- Security, medical services and anti-doping measures
- Engagement with district associations to ensure talent pathways and smooth logistics
Officials were reported to be mapping timelines for construction, renovation and trial events so that facilities are competition-ready well before November.
Why the Games matter for Telangana
Staging the KIYG offers Telangana an opportunity to highlight its sports infrastructure and to expose young athletes from the state to national-level competition at home. Previous hosts have used the Games to strengthen coaching networks, athlete identification schemes and district-level sporting programmes. The SATG leadership at the meeting was expected to coordinate these legacy elements alongside the immediate delivery requirements.
Next steps and coordination
The meeting concluded with a directive to tighten project timelines and strengthen inter-departmental coordination, the release said. SATG officials and the special chief secretary were tasked to prepare detailed action plans and progress reports for follow-up reviews.
With the Games less than a year away, Telangana’s administrative focus will now shift to converting plans into visible progress across Hyderabad and district venues that will host competitions, warm-up sessions and associated events.
