Arson follows murder; police step up presence
At least six houses belonging to Scheduled Caste families were allegedly set on fire late on Saturday night in Pratappur village of Muzaffarpur district after the murder of a 20-year-old youth, creating a tense situation in the area, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Navneet Kumar, a resident of Mohammadpur Khaje village under Karja police station limits. According to reports, Navneet was attacked with a knife while at a local fair with his friend Subhash Kumar and later succumbed to his injuries. A post-mortem was conducted before his body was taken back to his village.
Attack on Dalit colony and displacement of residents
Tension escalated after Navneet's body was returned. An angry mob allegedly attacked a Dalit colony in nearby Pratappur — where a suspect in the murder is reported to reside — and set fire to several homes. Residents of the colony fled to escape the violence, and fire brigade teams reached the spot after receiving information of the arson.
Local resident Ganesh Ram alleged the attack was carried out by a mob of more than 50 people and described it as a planned assault. He said Navneet had a dispute with the son of Gajendra Ram, who he alleged was involved in illegal liquor trade. The report did not provide any independent confirmation of the illegal-trade allegation.
"A mob of more than 50 people carried out a planned attack on the Dalit colony," said Ganesh Ram, a resident of Pratappur.
Police response and official statements
Senior police officers — SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra, Rural SP Rajesh Singh Prabhakar and City SP Mohibullah Ansari — visited the area to assess the situation, the police said. SSP Mishra confirmed additional armed police personnel were deployed in the village to prevent further violence and said the situation remained tense but was under control.
The SSP also noted that the deceased and the murder suspect belonged to different castes and said the administration was closely monitoring developments. There were reports of alleged aerial firing to spread panic, but police had not confirmed such firing at the time of reporting.
Immediate impacts and ongoing inquiries
The fire brigade reached the site after being informed of the blaze; however, residents said several houses had been badly damaged by the time firefighters arrived. The exact extent of property loss and any injuries sustained during the arson were not specified in initial reports.
Police have launched an investigation into the murder and the subsequent arson. Details released so far include the place of origin of the deceased, the location of the attack and names of senior officers on the scene. Further inquiries were said to be under way to identify those responsible for the killing and the communal violence that followed.
