State, company hold discussions as Bengaluru courts aircraft MRO investment
Bengaluru on Wednesday emerged as a potential site for expansion by Lufthansa Technik, the global provider of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, after the company delegation met Karnataka's minister for Large and Medium Industries, M B Patil. The delegation was led by Marcel Pastuska, chief executive officer of Lufthansa Technik Services India (Bengaluru), and included Annett Baessler, Deputy Consul General of Germany in Bengaluru, the state minister said.
Patil said the delegation was briefed on the city's existing aerospace strengths — including a globally connected international airport, a deep pool of engineering talent, research and development capabilities and a well-established Aerospace and Defence ecosystem. He added that the state government would work closely with national investment promotion agency Invest India and other stakeholders to take forward the company's investment proposal.

The discussions underline Bengaluru's ongoing bid to consolidate its position as an aerospace and defence hub. Company interest from a major international MRO player comes at a time when Karnataka has been actively promoting investor-friendly policies and seeking to attract advanced manufacturing and services in the aviation value chain.
- Local ecosystem: Karnataka has promoted clusters that combine engineering colleges, private industry, and dedicated aerospace parks.
- Skilled talent: Bengaluru's engineering and technical workforce are seen as a draw for MRO and high-value services.
- Connectivity: The city's airport and logistics links were highlighted during the delegation briefing.
While no financial figures or timelines were disclosed by the minister, officials said further rounds of interaction will determine the scale and nature of any investment. If realised, such an expansion by Lufthansa Technik — which operates globally across MRO, component services and support — could add capabilities and create skilled jobs in the region.

Industry analysts and state policymakers have for several years highlighted the benefits of attracting MRO players to India. A significant presence of international MRO operators in Bengaluru would support local suppliers, training institutes and related service providers. It could also deepen integration with defence and space suppliers in the state that already maintain a presence in and around the city.
Officials in Bengaluru have in recent years emphasised investor facilitation and single-window clearances to shorten time-to-market for manufacturing and services investments. The minister indicated Karnataka will collaborate with the central government's investment facilitation agencies to shepherd the proposal if Lufthansa Technik chooses to proceed.
Local stakeholders will closely watch follow-up meetings for details on land, incentives, workforce training and regulatory timelines. For Bengaluru, a confirmed investment by a global MRO player would be another milestone in its maturation from an IT and services hub to a diversified industrial and high-technology centre with stronger aerospace and defence capabilities.
No timeline for a decision was disclosed during the meeting, and both the company and state are expected to conduct detailed due diligence and further consultations with industry partners and regulatory bodies before any formal announcement is made, the report said.
