India Post flies Tiranga by drone from Mandi to Rehardhar; 150 drone routes planned in HP and Assam

In a first, the Department of Posts used a drone to deliver the National Flag from Mandi Head Post Office to Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh, an event virtually flagged off by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

The Department of Posts on Friday completed a landmark drone delivery of the National Flag in Himachal Pradesh, flying the Tiranga from Mandi Head Post Office to Rehardhar Branch Post Office as part of the government’s Independence Day activities, an official release said.

Virtual flag-off by Union Minister

The operation was flagged off virtually by Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, who witnessed the live take-off from Mandi and interacted with postal staff and the drone operator, the release added.

"The journey of the 'Tiranga' through the skies of Himachal Pradesh represented the spirit of a new India, determined to overcome geographical barriers and reach every citizen," the release quoted the minister as saying.

On landing at Rehardhar, postal personnel received the parcel containing the flag and handed it over to an army veteran, underscoring the ceremonial significance of the delivery, the release said.

Technology to complement postal network

The Department of Posts described the flight as an example of how emerging technologies can be used to strengthen last-mile connectivity, especially across remote and difficult terrain. The release said the exercise demonstrated how drone-based mail transmission could complement India Post’s physical network.

According to the statement, the Department has identified 150 drone routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam for deployment of drone-based mail transmission. The initiative is presented as part of efforts to ensure postal and other public services reach citizens where conventional transport is challenging.

  • Origin: Mandi Head Post Office
  • Destination: Rehardhar Branch Post Office
  • Pilot item: National Flag (Tiranga)
  • Planned expansion: 150 routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam

Public service and symbolism

Officials framed the drone delivery as aligning with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign by making the National Flag available for delivery to citizens, enabling participation in national celebrations from homes. The Department of Posts portrayed the move as reflecting its motto of "Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa", combining patriotism and service delivery.

Postal sources said the demonstration was intended to show that drones can help overcome geographical barriers that often slow conventional mail in hilly districts. The statement noted India Post’s continuing efforts to explore innovative modes of transmission without specifying timelines for full operational rollout on the identified routes.

What this means for residents

If scaled, drone mail could reduce delivery times to remote settlements and support delivery of small, time-sensitive consignments where road access is limited. The Department’s announcement did not, however, detail regulatory, safety or cost aspects of routine drone operations, nor the precise schedule for expanding the pilot to the 150 routes mentioned.

Authorities have in recent years signalled increasing interest in integrating drones into logistics chains for healthcare, disaster response and parcel delivery. The Department of Posts’ pilot in Himachal Pradesh adds a public-sector postal experiment to these trends, particularly relevant for hill districts where last-mile logistics remain complex.

The release emphasised that the pilot delivery of the National Flag was both symbolic and practical: a public demonstration that postal services are exploring technology to improve reach. It did not provide further operational particulars such as drone make, payload capacity, flight duration or airspace clearances for routine operations.

The Department’s decision to combine the demonstration with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign provided national visibility to the experiment, and indicated intent to link technological trials with citizen-facing services. Officials said the drone exercises are part of broader efforts to modernise India Post and address connectivity challenges in difficult terrain.
