Rain-triggered surge in river and landslides cut connectivity near Siliguri
Siliguri and adjoining hill belts saw significant disruption after heavy rains since the night of Thursday triggered landslides in Sikkim and a sharp rise in the Balasan river near Siliguri, according to published reports. A section of a recently restored diversion over the Balasan was washed away, cutting the movement of heavy vehicles between Siliguri and Mirik.
While heavy vehicles remain unable to ply on the affected route, authorities have kept a Bailey bridge in place to allow light vehicles and pedestrians to cross the river. Officials are monitoring the situation amid concerns that continued rainfall could worsen road connectivity and affect vulnerable settlements across the hills and the adjoining Terai-Dooars.
Damage in Sikkim's Ravangla area
In Sikkim, a mudslide at Lower Sangmoo under the Rangang–Yangang constituency on September 10 damaged residential structures in the Ravangla area. The landslide affected the house of Saney Rai and partially damaged the kitchen of Sancha Bir Rai at Taley Ghar. The latter dwelling has been identified as lying in a vulnerable zone should further heavy rain occur.
A joint team comprising senior state-level aides visited the affected locales. The delegation included the Additional Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Namchi district, Bishnu Sharma, and OSD to the Chief Minister Karma Subba, along with other officials. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Ravangla, carried out a damage assessment and relief and safety measures were implemented.

The family of Saney Rai was moved to makeshift accommodation as a precaution. Ex-gratia assistance under the prescribed disaster-relief norms has been provided to those whose house and kitchen were damaged, according to the report.
