Third runway at Indira Gandhi International cleared for operations from September 20
The Delhi International Airport operator said on Saturday that the third runway — Runway 11R/29L — will be reopened for flight operations from 20 September 2026 following completion of a comprehensive rehabilitation programme and receipt of regulatory approvals.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a joint venture between a consortium led by the GMR Group and the Airports Authority of India, said the strengthening and upgrade works began in February 2026 and concluded in time for recommissioning. The runway had been taken out of service for major works about seven months ago.
"The upgraded runway is now ready for operational use after all required inspections, validations and regulatory clearances," DIAL said in a statement.
According to the operator, the rehabilitation package comprised multiple airside infrastructure enhancements intended to improve operational safety, reduce runway occupancy time and bolster long-term resilience at one of the country's busiest aviation gateways.
- Runway resurfacing and pavement strengthening works.
- Permanent threshold displacement of Runway 29L.
- Construction of a new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1).
- Upgrades to airfield ground lighting and associated civil and electrical systems.
Commissioned in 2008, the third runway had been in service for 17 years prior to the rehabilitation, with regular maintenance and a minor rehabilitation carried out in 2017, DIAL said. The airport currently operates four runways and, per the operator, handles more than 1,300 flight movements daily and has an annual handling capability of 106 million passengers.
Likely operational and passenger impact
Airport officials and airlines will be working to integrate the reinstated runway into existing slot and movement planning. Recommissioning is expected to:
- Improve runway efficiency and optimise aircraft movement on the airfield.
- Reduce runway occupancy times, which can increase handling capacity during peak periods.
- Enhance operational reliability and resilience during adverse weather or maintenance on other runways.
Industry sources say the addition of a fully upgraded third runway should help relieve congestion at peak hours, though actual gains will depend on coordinated air traffic control procedures and airline scheduling adjustments. DIAL highlighted the construction of the new RET Z1 rapid exit taxiway as a specific measure to shorten runway occupancy time.
Programme details and timeline
The rehabilitation programme included a sequence of inspections, validations and clearances by relevant regulatory bodies before the runway could be returned to revenue service. DIAL said all such regulatory approvals are in place for the 20 September recommissioning.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Runway | 11R/29L (third runway) |
| Work started | February 2026 |
| Commissioned originally | 2008 |
| Reopened for operations | 20 September 2026 |
While DIAL framed the works as necessary strengthening and long-term capacity improvements, local stakeholders including airlines, ground handlers and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation will need to finalise revised operating procedures and slot utilisations. The operator said the upgrades will "further strengthen operational reliability" at the airport.
For passengers flying to or from Delhi, the practical effects may emerge over coming weeks as airlines adjust schedules and the airport monitors throughput. Commuters should also expect normal airside operations to resume on the reopened runway subject to real-time operational constraints and seasonal traffic variations.
The reopening comes at a time when Indian aviation continues to expand rapidly: larger passenger numbers and increased flight frequencies place a premium on airfield efficiency and infrastructure upkeep. DIAL's statement noted the runway resurfacing and lighting upgrades were part of measures to ensure safe operations and sustain capacity at the capital's principal international gateway.
No financial figures for the rehabilitation package were disclosed in the statement.
