New Delhi: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped on Monday evening by three men who posed as policemen inside a park near Kalkaji Mandir in South Delhi, the police said. The complaint states the incident occurred after the teenager and a 17-year-old male friend visited the temple for prayers.
Sequence of events and immediate police action
According to the police, the two teenagers went to Kalkaji Mandir around 7 pm and later moved to a park near the temple at about 7:30 pm. Three men, aged approximately 25 to 30 years, approached the pair, claimed to be policemen, and threatened them before sexually assaulting the girl, the complaint said.
One of the accused allegedly threatened the victims with a firearm and a knife and sexually assaulted the girl. Following that, the two other men also allegedly committed sexual assaults, police said. The perpetrators then threatened both the girl and her friend, preventing them from raising an alarm, the complaint added.
A PCR call reporting the rape at the park, located between Kalkaji Mandir and the ISKCON Temple, was received at 8:45 pm. A police team reached the scene and escorted the girl, a Delhi resident, for medical examination. Further legal action is being taken on the basis of her statement, the police said.
Investigation steps and arrests
Police said they scanned CCTV footage from the park and surrounding areas to establish the sequence of events and to identify those present at the time. Multiple teams were formed to trace the accused.
One team received information about the movement of an accused near DM Office Road, Amar Colony, where they laid a trap. When officers intercepted him, the man allegedly opened fire at the police party. Despite repeated directions to surrender, the accused reportedly fired three rounds at the cops, who then shot him in the right leg.
The arrested accused has been identified as Asif, who works at Okhla Mandi. The other two suspects, named Hemant and Mukesh, were also arrested by police on Tuesday, according to the incident record.

Forensics, evidence collection and victim care
Police said a forensic team examined the encounter site and that victims were provided medical attention. CCTV footage from the park and the surrounding area was collected to corroborate the complaint and to identify other possible witnesses or accomplices.
The case is being processed on the basis of the statement given by the survivor. Investigating teams have also gathered information about people who may have been present in or around the park at the time of the incident, the police added.
Safety and wider implications
The incident has renewed concerns over public safety in open spaces in the national capital, particularly after sundown. Parks and temple precincts in South Delhi are frequented by families and youth, and attacks that involve impersonation of law-enforcement personnel raise particular alarm over citizens' trust in official authority.

The investigating officers are working to reconstruct movements and to determine whether others were involved or if there were prior incidents linked to the suspects.
