Prince Edward Island will continue to provide free essential school supplies to students in kindergarten through Grade 9 in the public school system for the 2026-27 school year, the province announced Thursday, allocating $1 million to education authorities to purchase and distribute materials.
Program continues to ease back-to-school costs
The funding is intended to ensure children across the Island start the school year with basic classroom materials without putting additional pressure on household budgets. The province says the program will serve more than 16,500 students enrolled in the public system.
Items covered under the initiative include pencils, pens, binders, scribblers, folders, paper and art supplies. The government reiterated that some personal items will remain the responsibility of families, including indoor shoes, backpacks, lunch bags and water bottles. Where applicable, students are still expected to provide calculators and headphones.
“Preparing for a new school year is an exciting time for families, but we know the cost of getting ready for September can add up quickly. We are continuing to provide school supplies at no cost to elementary and junior high students to help ease some of those expenses for families while ensuring students have what they need to start the year ready to learn.” — Minister of Finance and Affordability Jill Burridge
Background and uptake since 2023
The initiative began in 2023. Since then, the province says thousands of Island students have benefited from access to essential classroom materials, an outcome the government frames as both an affordability measure and a way to remove barriers to learning that can follow from students lacking basic supplies.
School boards are responsible for purchasing and distributing the materials to students. The province did not release a detailed breakdown of how the $1 million will be allocated among individual school authorities, nor did it provide per-student expenditure figures in the announcement.

What families need to know
Parents and guardians should expect supplies to be distributed through their child’s school. Families should still plan to provide the personal items not included in the program. The announcement pointed to a government webpage for more information about the Free School Supplies initiative and listed a media contact in the Department of Education and Early Years for further enquiries.

Local impact
For many Island families the return-to-school season can mean a significant one-time expense. The continuation of the free supplies program is aimed at reducing that immediate cost, particularly for households with multiple children in the early grades. Schools and parents I spoke with in past years welcomed the measure as practical and straightforward — it addresses a tangible need at the start of the school year.
Administrators will now be tasked with ensuring the supplies are ordered in time and matched to classroom needs. That logistical work will take place this summer as schools prepare for classes to resume in September.
The province described the announcement as part of broader affordability efforts. Beyond the supply program itself, officials encourage families to consult their local school for any additional supports that may be available through community or school-based programs.
As the school year approaches, families should watch for communication from their school about the timing and method of distribution and for any lists of additional items students are expected to bring.
