Regina is playing host to the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship this week, and Saskatchewan’s junior players ensured the province will be well represented as the competition heads into its closing rounds.
Strong showing from provincial contingent
Reigning Saskatchewan junior champion Ryan Mosher produced the best local score in the second round at Wascana Country Club, carding a three-under 69 that included four birdies and an eagle. That performance moved Mosher to one-under overall and tied him for 24th place heading into the third round.
Joining Mosher in the weekend’s final rounds are four more Saskatchewan boys who made the cut:
- Austin Nesbitt (Pilot Butte), 15, tied for 39th at even par;
- Aricin Franklin (Saskatoon), tied for 39th at even par;
- Matty Schmiess (Swift Current), tied for 39th at +1;
- Oliver Matyczuk (Saskatoon), tied for 67th at +4.
Leaderboard snapshot
The tournament leaderboard is paced by Ottawa’s Michael Vivone, who holds a comfortable advantage at nine-under. He is one stroke clear of Thomas Xu, who led after the opening round.
| Position | Player | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Michael Vivone (Ottawa) | -9 |
| 2 | Thomas Xu | -8 |
| 24 (tie) | Ryan Mosher (Saskatchewan) | -1 |
Team race and remaining schedule
In the inter-provincial team standings, Saskatchewan sits tied for sixth alongside Manitoba at +4. Alberta tops the team leaderboard at 11-under.
The third round is scheduled for Wednesday, with the championship concluding on Friday. Local supporters who want to catch the action at Wascana Country Club can expect the field to tighten as the weekend approaches.
Girls’ championship delayed by weather
While the boys complete their second-round play in Regina, the Canadian Junior Girls Championship in Caledon, Ont., faced interruptions. Lightning forced officials to suspend play twice on Wednesday before the second round was ultimately called for the day.
Play on the girls’ side will resume Thursday morning. Markham’s Evelyn Ma currently leads the girls’ field at three-under after finishing a one-under 70. Defending champion Shauna Liu and Montreal’s Zixuan Tan are also at three-under with their rounds still in progress.
Several Saskatchewan girls had partial or completed rounds affected by the weather or had high scores on the leaderboard. Saskatoon’s Yoyo Zhu completed her second round at 90 and sits 138th, while Tina Liu of Warman and Saskatoon’s Grace Odnokon were each at +9 in unfinished rounds. Chloe Wills of Kyle was at +10 and tied for 59th.
What’s next for Saskatchewan juniors
For the boys moving on in Regina, the next 36 holes will decide final standings and potential national honours. The team result also remains in play and will be final after Friday’s closing round.
For families and golf fans, this week offers a close look at some of the province’s promising young players. With Mosher and four teammates still in contention, Saskatchewan will be looking to turn home-course familiarity and provincial depth into strong finishes as the championship winds up.
Coverage of the final rounds and any notable finishes will be available from local outlets as results are posted over the remaining days of competition.
