KIMBERLEY — A 40-year-old foreign national was arrested in Kimberley on 11 September after police found suspected illicit drugs and, during a subsequent search of his home, seized electronic devices with a combined estimated value of about R160 000, the Northern Cape police said.
Initial stop leads to larger discovery
The arrest followed an observation by an officer attached to the Northern Cape Provincial Operational Response Services at about 09:00 on Friday, 11 September. The officer noticed what appeared to be a suspicious transaction and intervened, requesting operational assistance, Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien, provincial police spokesperson, said.
During the initial intervention the suspect was found in possession of suspected illicit drugs, believed to be khat, as well as undisclosed cash and three mobile phones. The man was arrested on charges of possession of suspected illicit drugs and possession of suspected stolen property, the police said.
Search at Herlear home uncovers more devices
When asked to identify his residential premises for further enquiries the suspect initially gave an incorrect address in New Park, but later disclosed his actual residence in Herlear. A subsequent search at the Herlear property yielded additional electronic devices.
Police recovered six mobile phones and four Samsung tablets from the premises. The devices have an estimated combined value of approximately R160 000 and are suspected to be stolen property. A vehicle believed to have been used in the commission of crime was also confiscated and will form part of the ongoing investigation, the spokesperson said.

Next steps and court appearance
The suspect is due to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court on the charges relating to possession of suspected illicit drugs and possession of suspected stolen property. Brigadier Gamieldien said additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues and ownership of the electronic devices is established.
- All seized electronic devices will be examined as part of the investigation to establish provenance and rightful ownership.
- Undisclosed cash seized at the scene is suspected to be proceeds of crime and will be processed accordingly.
- The vehicle is held pending further enquiries into whether it was used in the commission of offences.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended the officer whose observation and swift action led to the arrest and subsequent recoveries, the police statement said.
Context for residents
Incidents where routine policing interventions yield larger recoveries of suspected stolen property are reminders that communities and lawful businesses can be affected by organised theft and the illicit trade in devices. Recovered items such as phones and tablets are frequently subject to ownership disputes; the police will follow processes to return items to lawful owners where possible, or to retain them as exhibits for court proceedings.
Residents who believe they may be the owners of the seized devices should expect the police to publish instructions or contact relevant stations as enquiries progress. The Kimberley Magistrates’ Court will process the criminal matter once the accused appears; any further charges will be announced by the provincial police as the investigation develops.
Police urged community members to continue reporting suspicious transactions and to safeguard serial numbers and proof of purchase for valuable electronic devices — information that can speed recovery and confirmation of ownership should items be stolen.
Further updates will be provided by Northern Cape police as the investigation proceeds and charges are finalised.
