Five suspects have been arrested after two men were killed in a shooting in Military Road, Steenberg, on Tuesday afternoon, Western Cape police said.
Rapid response led to arrests
Officers from Operation Prosper responded to reports of a double murder at about 12:30. Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said two men, aged 23 and 37, were fatally wounded in what investigators are treating as a gang-related shooting.
Gwala said police were alerted that the suspects fled in a red VW Polo, triggering a high-speed pursuit. The vehicle was abandoned in Kirstenhof, after which the suspects allegedly hijacked a Toyota RunX. All five suspects — aged 27, 28, 31, 32 and 40 — were arrested shortly afterwards.
Firearms recovered
During a search of the hijacked vehicle police recovered two assault rifles. The City of Cape Town’s statement added that officers also recovered a 9mm pistol and that City law-enforcement members, including the Aviation unit and the Metro Police K9 unit, were deployed in the follow-up search operation.
“We commend SAPS and all agencies involved for their swift response, which resulted in the apprehension of suspects and the recovery of firearms.”
The quote was issued by the Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) in response to the arrests, the CPF said in a statement.
Court process and oversight
The suspects will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once charged, Gwala said. The arrests and weapon recoveries were welcomed by Western Cape SAPS management, which described the response as swift.
Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais has said she will strengthen efforts to tackle gang violence in affected communities, according to the City’s account of events.

Local policing operations intensified
The City of Cape Town said its law-enforcement staff pursued additional vehicles connected to the shooting into the Lakside area, where suspects abandoned getaway cars and left firearms behind before fleeing into nearby terrain. The City called in air support and K9 units as part of a “massive search operation”, it said.
The multi-agency response — involving SAPS, City law-enforcement, Aviation and the Metro Police K9 unit — illustrates a coordinated approach to tackling gang-related incidents in southern suburbs. Police recovery of two assault rifles emphasises the serious firepower often connected to gang violence.
Community impact and questions ahead
Steenberg and surrounding communities have endured recurring incidents of gang violence that affect daily life, schooling and local businesses. Rapid arrests in this case will be welcomed by residents, but questions remain about how to prevent retaliatory attacks and how policing and social interventions will be sustained.
Investigations into motive and the precise sequence of events remain under way. As the suspects proceed to court, prosecutors will determine the formal charges based on statements, forensic evidence and recovered weapons.
