A Durban family is in mourning after 43-year-old Zodwa Prudence Magwaza was found dead at her Cornubia home on Saturday, in what police are investigating as a murder linked to domestic violence.
What happened
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Magwaza was discovered with assault wounds. Reports indicate she had been attacked by her boyfriend and, while attempting to run for help, collapsed at a neighbour's doorstep where she later died.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) security officers at the scene, quoted by the private security company, said officers restrained a suspect who had blood on his shirt and a burst lip after an altercation with the victim.
“Reaction Officers restrained the suspect. Blood was noticed on his shirt, and it was established that he had sustained a burstlip during an altercation with the victim,”
Verulam SAPS have opened an investigation into the incident. Police could not immediately confirm the outcome of the suspect’s first court appearance.
Community context and response
Magwaza had been recently relocated from Chatsworth to the Cornubia Housing Scheme as part of the eThekwini Municipality’s flood victim relocation programme. DA eThekwini Ward 102 councillor Rory Macpherson visited the family on Tuesday to offer condolences and to check whether they had received counselling and other support.
“Gender-based violence is a big problem,”
Macpherson said one family member had been aware of assaults but had been threatened and therefore remained silent. He added that the community was angry about the killing and did not want the accused to return to the area. The councillor said he would write to the municipal speaker to request support for the bereaved family.

Broader issue: GBV and public concern
councillor Macpherson’s comments underline a wider concern about violence against women. He urged women experiencing abuse to speak out and seek help, noting that threats and intimidation can silence potential witnesses. The provincial police and civic representatives have repeatedly highlighted the need for coordinated responses that go beyond criminal justice to include social support and community safety measures.
Police Minister Firoz Cachalia recently released quarterly crime statistics that the provincial and national departments say underline the sustained challenge of violence against women and children. Authorities and civil-society organisations continue to call for sustained prevention, better victim support services and faster, more effective policing.
Practical information for residents
- If you witness or are subject to violence, report the incident to your nearest police station; in this case, Verulam SAPS is leading the investigation.
- Seek medical attention immediately if injured and ask for a police case number to document the incident.
- Counselling and psychosocial support are important for families; local ward councillors and community organisations may be able to advise on available services.
The Cornubia community has been through recent hardship after flooding and relocations; this killing has intensified local fears. Residents and leaders say they want swift justice and better protection for vulnerable people living in the housing scheme.
