Week of targeted policing yields arrests and a vehicle recovery in Benoni
Benoni residents were the focus of a series of targeted operations by the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) last week, which led to eight arrests and the recovery of a vehicle reported hijacked in Ivory Park, the squad said.
The operations ran between 17 and 23 August. According to information supplied by the BFS, officers opened tracing and search operations after a number of incidents were reported to the squad. The activity ranged from tracing a suspect in a domestic matter to searches that uncovered illegal drugs.

The squad’s interventions were carried out in several townships around Benoni. The incidents reported to the BFS and subsequent arrests were as follows:
- 17 August — Esselen Park, Thembisa: a tracing operation located and arrested a 30-year-old man wanted in connection with damage to property and domestic violence.
- 18 August — Kanana Extension 4, Rabie Ridge: officers responded to an assault complaint. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested and searches of a room found narcotics, leading to further drug-related charges.
- 19 August — Ivory Park: a 28-year-old man was arrested for possession of drugs (five packets of methamphetamine).
- Date within 17–23 August — Ivory Park: a silver Renault Kwid that had been reported hijacked was recovered by the squad.
At a property in Rabie Ridge, the BFS said a search of one room produced 10 packets of methamphetamine on the primary suspect. Two other men found in the room were also searched; officers discovered a combined eight packets of methamphetamine and 13 Mandrax (methaqualone) tablets, resulting in their arrests.

Overall the BFS said eight arrests were made during the period. The squad did not provide the ages or identities of all those arrested beyond the cases outlined above. The arrests include possession and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and an arrest linked to reports of domestic violence and property damage.
Residents in neighbourhoods affected by the operations welcomed visible police activity but also said they wanted more regular updates from law enforcement and quicker responses to complaints. Local community members spoke of frustration with recurring drug problems in informal gathering points and rental rooms, and said they hoped arrests would curtail supply routes in surrounding suburbs.
Law-enforcement operations such as these are part of ongoing efforts to reduce violent and drug-related crime around Benoni and neighbouring parts of Ekurhuleni. The Benoni Flying Squad is a specialised unit that conducts rapid-response and tracing operations; on this occasion the squad’s intervention also led to the discovery of drugs that attracted additional charges.
The BFS statement was recorded by the local paper’s reporting. No further detail was provided about whether any of the arrested persons had appeared in court by the end of the reporting period.
