The Aquarium of Guam has appointed Aaron Sprowl as its new general manager as the attraction moves through a major redevelopment ahead of a planned reopening.
Experienced operator to oversee reopening and day-to-day running
Advanced Aquarium Technologies (AAT) said Sprowl brings more than two decades of experience in public aquarium and zoological operations across multiple regions, and will lead the facility under a long-term management services agreement that places responsibility for daily management, operation and future development with AAT.
Sprowl’s career, according to the company’s announcement, has included senior leadership roles covering facility openings, major redevelopment projects, conservation work, animal welfare and guest experience. The release notes previous appointments with world-class attractions, including work for Red Sea Global’s Corallium Marine Life Institute in Saudi Arabia, Nuevo Acuario Mazatlán in Mexico and the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station in the United States, as well as operational leadership across multiple SEA LIFE sites while at Merlin Entertainments.
"He brings an exceptional combination of operational leadership, aquarium expertise and project delivery experience. Few professionals have had direct involvement in as many aquarium openings, redevelopments and operational transformations around the world. His experience will be invaluable as we complete the aquarium's redevelopment and prepare for reopening,"
The comment was made by John Langmead, founder and chief executive of AAT, in the company statement announcing the appointment.
What the appointment means for the island
The aquarium sits within the Dusit Place development, where management previously indicated the attraction will be among several new establishments opening in the coming months. AAT’s takeover of operational leadership signals a concentrated effort to professionalise day-to-day running and to deliver a polished visitor offer when the site reopens.
While a firm reopening date has not been published, the appointment of a figure with a track record in large-scale capital projects and openings suggests AAT is preparing the attraction for a coordinated launch.
- Leadership continuity: a seasoned general manager to supervise operations and final stages of redevelopment.
- Project delivery: experience in openings and redevelopments may shorten the path to a public launch, subject to contractor and regulatory timelines.
- Visitor experience and welfare: responsibilities include conservation programmes and animal welfare as part of the aquarium’s remit.
Career highlights and international experience
The company announcement highlights Sprowl’s global résumé, reflecting a career split between public aquaria and zoological facilities. The scope of his work implies familiarity with the technical, logistical and regulatory demands of opening or redeveloping modern marine attractions.
| Organisation / Project | Region |
|---|---|
| Corallium Marine Life Institute (Red Sea Global) | Saudi Arabia |
| Nuevo Acuario Mazatlán | Mexico |
| St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station | United States |
| Merlin Entertainments / SEA LIFE attractions | Australia, New Zealand, Asia and North America |
Advanced Aquarium Technologies said it will take primary responsibility for the Aquarium of Guam under a long-term management services agreement, providing operational leadership as redevelopment work continues. Management for the Dusit Place development has previously described the aquarium as one of several establishments due to open in the near future, but no hard opening date has been released.
The appointment is being framed by AAT as a milestone for both the company and the project; the organisation will oversee day-to-day operation and future development alongside the completion of the site’s refurbishment.
For visitors and local stakeholders the named recruit signals intent to position the Aquarium of Guam as a professionally run attraction with international best-practice experience at its helm, though full public access will depend on the remaining redevelopment timetable and announcements on an opening date.
