RMIT University has opened a Marketing Technology Lab designed to teach marketers how to use retail and customer-engagement technologies while keeping consumer privacy front of mind. The initiative responds to growing pressure on organisations to reconcile data collection, personalisation and trust.
Practical training with a privacy-first focus
The new facility provides an immersive learning environment where students can test marketing technologies used to personalise customer experiences, while also exploring the legal, ethical and technical boundaries of data use. The lab has been created with the explicit aim of preparing graduates to take responsibility for how those technologies are deployed.

The comment comes from Jason Pallant, the founding director of the RMIT Marketing Technology Lab. Pallant said the lab will serve as a "safe space" for examining the trade-offs between personalisation and privacy, and that innovation should not come at the expense of consumer trust.

RMIT has positioned the lab as a bridge between academic teaching and commercial practice. Shane Duggan, a senior industry fellow in economics, finance and marketing at the university, said the centre can help establish a benchmark for marketing-technology education and research.
Duggan emphasised that technology itself does not guarantee better customer experiences: trust does. He said the lab will give the next generation of marketers the opportunity to explore how organisations can use data and artificial intelligence responsibly while still delivering the personalised experiences customers expect.
