Police have launched a murder investigation after a 25-year-old man was shot dead outside a pub in Clapham on Monday evening, leaving residents shaken and parts of Willington Road cordoned off.

Emergency services were called to reports of gunshots on Willington Road shortly before 10pm. Despite the efforts of paramedics, the 25-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said the victim’s family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

Arrest and hospitalisation

Shortly after the shooting, a man attended hospital with a gunshot wound. The Metropolitan Police said they were awaiting an update on his condition. A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police maintained a cordon in the area of The Landor pub, at the junction of Willington Road and Landor Road, into Tuesday as forensic teams processed the scene. Photographs from the scene showed a forensic tent in place and officers in forensic suits operating near Lopez House on Willington Road. Floral tributes have been left close to the pub.

What witnesses described

Local people told WE NEWS they heard multiple shots and saw immediate chaos. One resident, who did not want to be named, said he heard three gunshots, saw someone run out of The Landor and shout "call the police". He said he saw a moped and a white car drive away before officers arrived and that women outside the pub were "screaming and crying".

"There was a guy lying on the ground, lots of blood around him. There were loads of people around him, I went and helped. I work in healthcare and I went and helped assist."

The woman who gave that account said the crowd stepped back when the police arrived and that there had been a significant emergency response, including armed officers at one point.

Police response and community impact

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, Central South Borough Commander, said the incident would cause concern within the local community and indicated there would be an increased police presence in the area. Officers are continuing enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Residents in this part of south London, where pubs and late-night venues line Willington Road, expressed alarm that such violence had occurred outside a busy boozer. Floral tributes and a taped-off area remain visible on Tuesday as neighbours process the event and officers carry out forensic work.
