Investigation ongoing after 40-year-old found dead at city car park

Police in Truro have said enquiries continue after the unexplained death of a local man whose body was discovered on the ground floor of Moorfield Car Park, Calenick Street. Officers were called to the scene at around 10.45am on Monday, 17 August and the man, aged in his 40s and described as being from the Truro area, was later confirmed deceased.

A 44-year-old man from Truro was arrested the following day on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, administering a noxious substance and theft. He was released from custody on Wednesday, 19 August and is no longer linked to the investigation, police said.

"The man arrested as part of our investigation has today been released without charge and is no longer connected to our enquiries. Our investigation continues as we work to establish the circumstances surrounding this man’s death,"

The comment above was given by Detective Inspector Jon Bray, the senior investigating officer. Specialist officers are supporting the deceased man’s next of kin, and police have described the death as unexplained while they carry out extensive inquiries.

Forensic work completed, cordon lifted

Officers carried out forensic examinations and searches at the car park and afterwards lifted the police cordon and reopened the site. Investigators remain at pains to trace the movements of the man in the days before he was found, and continue to review CCTV footage to build a clearer picture of events.

  • 10.45am, Monday 17 August — body of a man found on the ground floor of Moorfield Car Park.
  • Tuesday 18 August — 44-year-old arrested on suspicion of multiple offences.
  • Wednesday 19 August — the arrested man released without charge; no longer linked to investigation.
  • Ongoing — CCTV review and further enquiries to establish circumstances.

Local residents said they had noticed the police presence earlier in the week and welcomed the authorities' work, while also expressing concern. Moorfield is a small but central car park in Truro and the discovery of a death there has unsettled neighbours and people who use the area for shopping and commuting.

Police appeal for witnesses

Detective Inspector Bray has urged anyone who may have seen anything suspicious between the afternoon of Friday, 14 August and 10.45am on Monday, 17 August to come forward.

He added that the force was grateful for the patience of the public while the investigative and forensic work was carried out at the scene. Members of the public who believe they can assist are asked to contact the police either via the force website or by calling 101, quoting reference 50260218970.

The investigation remains active and the details released so far are limited as detectives work to establish the full circumstances. The presence of forensic teams and the scale of enquiries reflect the seriousness with which officers are treating the case.

For a city that thrives on its compact streets and close-knit community, such incidents are rare but profound. Residents understandably want clarity and reassurance; the police appeal for information is intended to expedite answers and provide that reassurance where possible.

Anyone with information is asked to get in touch through the Force website or by calling 101 and quoting the reference above.
