Trial opens over alleged long‑running abuse in Swindon household
Four men have gone on trial at Winchester Crown Court accused of sexually assaulting the former wife of a one‑time Swindon Conservative councillor, a case that has brought into public view harrowing allegations linked to a family home in the area.
The ex‑councillor, who has admitted repeatedly drugging and raping his wife over a period of years, pleaded guilty earlier to multiple offences. His former partner has waived lifetime anonymity and is at the centre of the prosecution against the four defendants who are accused of taking part in assaults at the property.
The trial opened with the four defendants sitting quietly in the dock as jurors were sworn in. The judge delivering directions warned the jury that some of the material they would see would be difficult to view.
"The fact that Mr Young has pleaded guilty to those charges is evidence of his guilt of that charge but it is not evidence that these defendants are guilty," the judge told the jury, adding that some evidence would include "graphic and sexually explicit images" which might be distressing.
The judge also reminded jurors of their duty to ensure a fair trial and to resist being overwhelmed by emotion when considering upsetting material.
Who is on trial and what are the charges?
The four men face a range of sexual offence charges. Their names, ages and pleas as reported at the opening of the case are set out below.
| Name | Age | Address (as reported) | Plea |
|---|---|---|---|
| Norman Macksoni | 48 | Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire | Denied one count of rape |
| Richard Wilkins | 62 | Toothill, Swindon, Wiltshire | Pleaded not guilty to rape and assault by penetration |
| Connor Sanderson‑Doyle | 32 | Swindon | Denied sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching |
| Mohammed Hassan | 38 | Swindon | Pleaded not guilty to sexual touching |
Prosecutors say the defendants were recruited by the ex‑councillor to take part in assaults at the couple’s Swindon home. The man who has already admitted offences is not a defendant in this trial but his earlier guilty pleas were referenced by the judge as part of the background to the case.
Jury warned over distressing evidence
Mr Justice Saini, who is presiding, specifically cautioned the jury about the nature of the material they will be expected to consider. He told them some evidence would include recorded sexual activity and graphic images. The judge stressed the importance of assessing the factual evidence dispassionately.
- Jury composition: eight men and four women were sworn in at the start of the trial.
- Evidence warning: the judge said jurors may find some of the material "very distressing" but must not let emotion determine their verdict.
- Status of co‑accused: the former councillor has pleaded guilty to similar offences but that plea does not determine the outcome for the current defendants.
The case is being heard in Winchester rather than in Swindon; Crown Court trials are often assigned to courts around the region depending on capacity and case lists. Members of the public and local representatives will no doubt be following the proceedings closely given the serious nature of the allegations and the involvement of people known to the local area.
Reporting restrictions and the sensitivity of the material mean further detail from inside the trial cannot be published. The court has been told the evidence the jury will hear includes images and video, and jurors have been reminded of the need to treat that material with care and to follow the judge’s directions on how it should be considered.
The trial will continue at Winchester Crown Court and further hearings are scheduled as prosecutors present their case and the defence respond.
