The Sikkim government on Friday constituted a task force to provide relief and necessary assistance to people from the state who may be missing, stranded or otherwise affected by the flash floods that struck central Nepal this week, an official said.
Mandate, leadership and coordination
According to a notification issued on Thursday (August 27), the panel will be chaired by Prabhakar Rai, director of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA). Its responsibilities include collecting, compiling and verifying information about residents of Sikkim who have been reported missing, injured, stranded or deceased in the incident.
The task force is to coordinate with the Union Government, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and other relevant agencies to obtain verified information about affected persons. It will also establish and maintain communication with families of those from Sikkim, facilitating exchange of confirmed updates on the status and whereabouts of their kin.
"It will collect, compile and verify information regarding persons reported missing, stranded, injured, deceased or otherwise affected in the incident," the official said, citing the notification.
Context: scale of the Nepal disaster
The task force formation follows a catastrophic ice-rock avalanche triggered by a glacial collapse close to the Nepal–Tibet border on Wednesday, which sent a mass of water, mud and debris downstream through parts of central Nepal. The disaster has devastated towns and villages, sweeping away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges, and damaging hydropower installations.
As of Friday (August 28) the Nepal authorities reported a mounting human toll:
- Death toll: 469 confirmed
- People rescued: 1,545 injured and stranded persons recovered from affected areas
- Under treatment: 84 individuals receiving medical care in hospitals in Kathmandu
- Search and rescue: 7,451 security personnel mobilised, including 2,391 Nepal Army personnel

What the task force will do for families in Sikkim
The notification specifies that the panel's work will include verification of reports about affected persons and facilitating verified information flow between agencies and families. By linking with the Indian diplomatic mission in Nepal and central agencies, the state aims to speed up identification and notification procedures for residents of Sikkim who may be caught up in the calamity.
Officials said the arrangement is intended to avoid confusion and reduce distress among families awaiting word on missing or stranded relatives, while enabling timely consular and logistic support where needed.
Ongoing rescue operations across Nepal
Search-and-rescue efforts entered a third day on Friday with large-scale mobilisation by Nepal's security forces. The avalanche and ensuing flash floods have swept through river valleys and settlements downstream of the glacier collapse, creating major access and communication challenges for relief teams.
The federal and local authorities in Nepal are continuing operations to recover bodies, locate missing persons and reach stranded communities. Indian authorities, including consular representatives, have been engaged to assist Indian nationals and coordinate cross-border information sharing where required.
At this stage the Sikkim government has limited its role to information-gathering, coordination and family liaison; the notification does not specify financial assistance, evacuation plans or the deployment of Sikkim state teams to Nepal.
