Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple development projects totalling ₹4,000 crore at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, marking the culmination of Sikkim’s 50th Year of Statehood celebrations.
Centre emphasises connectivity, tourism and health
Addressing the closing ceremony, the Prime Minister said the Union government has prioritised improvements in connectivity and infrastructure across the state. He highlighted Sikkim’s potential as a tourism destination and reiterated the Centre’s commitment to develop those opportunities for the benefit of the local population.

Mr Modi also drew attention to the state’s achievements in organic and natural farming, describing these as a model that the rest of the country can emulate. He underlined the Centre's efforts to expand affordable healthcare, noting the distribution of free Ayushman cards to economically vulnerable citizens and those aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Youth, sports and cultural display
The Prime Minister praised Sikkim’s youth for their performances in national and international arenas in sports such as football, boxing and archery. He pointed to initiatives like Khelo India and the Fit India Movement as platforms helping young people hone their skills.
A cultural presentation titled “1000 Steps of Unity”, featuring over 1,500 artistes, accompanied the event and was commended by the Prime Minister as a representation of the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

Alongside the infrastructure and development works valued at ₹4,000 crore, the Prime Minister inaugurated and launched several other initiatives across the Northeast, including the establishment of six cricket academies for the region. He described the Northeast as the country’s “Ashtalakshmi”, saying ongoing and proposed projects will transform livelihoods in the area.
