Delivery dispute in Ganga Sagar Colony ends in assault; video prompts police action

Meerut — A delivery agent was allegedly assaulted on the night of August 14 in Ganga Sagar Colony, under the jurisdiction of Bhawanpur police station, after a disagreement with a customer over a short delay in an online order, police said. The incident, captured on closed-circuit television and circulated on social media, prompted a complaint and the arrest of the accused.

According to the complaint registered at Bhawanpur station, the delivery agent, identified as Amit, who lives in Ganganagar and works part-time while pursuing his studies, reached the customer's flat at about 9.30pm to deliver an order that, he said, had been delayed by around five minutes. The customer, named in police records as Yaman, 34, allegedly accused Amit of arriving 15 minutes late and spoke to him sharply, after which an argument ensued that escalated to physical violence.

“He threatened to implicate me in a molestation case involving his wife and threatened to kill me,” Amit alleged in his complaint, and said the accused took his mobile phone and attempted to take his money.

CCTV footage circulated on social media shows the two men talking outside the flat before the confrontation. The recording, as described in the police complaint, appears to show Yaman snatching Amit’s mobile phone and assaulting him — slapping and kicking him — while a woman emerges from the flat and remains at the spot. Amit later alleged that the woman signalled Yaman to take him inside, where he was again assaulted before being brought back outside.

Fellow delivery agents who recognised Amit after the footage circulated approached the Bhawanpur police station and submitted a complaint on his behalf, the records show. In response to the video, delivery workers announced a temporary work stoppage, demanding action against the accused and saying they would resume deliveries only after a public apology from him.

Bhawanpur station house officer (SHO) Joginder Singh confirmed the arrest and said the accused would be produced before the court as per procedure. The SHO did not provide further details about the specific sections of law invoked, but police said a case was registered following Amit’s written complaint on August 15.

The incident has prompted concern among delivery personnel in Meerut, many of whom said the viral footage helped fellow workers identify the victim and press for formal action. The episode also raises questions about on-the-ground safety for gig workers and how disputes over short delays can escalate into threats and violence.

Local residents and delivery firms have in recent years highlighted similar incidents across the city and state, calling for better mechanisms to protect workers and for customers to use company grievance channels rather than resorting to confrontation. Police have reiterated that such matters may be addressed through complaints and that alleged crimes will be investigated and prosecuted under applicable provisions.

The arrested man will be produced in court; further legal proceedings will determine whether additional charges are framed. Meanwhile, delivery agents involved in the stoppage said they would monitor the case and decide on resuming work once they receive more clarity from police and an apology from the accused.
