Police maintain presence as Ahirauli village reels after brutal killing
Gorakhpur — Homes of the accused in the August 8 murder of a local electricity department contractor have been locked since the arrests, and police personnel continue to guard the properties in Ahirauli village, officials and local reports said on Wednesday. Officers deployed at one of the houses have taken responsibility for feeding a German Shepherd and a cow that were left behind by fleeing family members.
Police said the deceased is 52-year-old contractor Shiv Kumar Tripathi, who, according to multiple accounts, was returning from a funeral feast in the village when he was attacked. Local reporting and a video circulating on social media show the assault involved sharp-edged weapons.
- Arrests and security: Dainik Bhaskar reported that eight accused have been arrested in connection with the killing and that police have deployed personnel outside the arrested men’s homes as a precautionary measure.
- Animals abandoned: Officers at one of the sealed houses have been giving food and water to a German Shepherd and a cow that were left without care after family members reportedly fled.
- Possible motive: Police investigators say the murder appears linked to a long-standing rivalry stemming from the 2024 killing of Aadesh Chaudhary, in which members of the contractor’s extended family were reportedly named as accused.
Eyewitness descriptions published in regional and national reports state that Tripathi was first attacked in the street and, after collapsing, was taken into an autorickshaw by villagers who were attempting to rush him to hospital. The assailants allegedly intercepted the vehicle and dragged Tripathi out before continuing the assault. A Times of India report said the victim received multiple sharp-weapon injuries and died at the scene.
“The accused told investigators that he had sharpened the sword for two days after buying it so that it could inflict deeper injuries,” police told reporters, according to Dainik Bhaskar.
Local police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and the role of those involved. The South Gorakhpur police unit, led by SP Dinesh Kumar Puri, confirmed that people have been detained for questioning. Reporting differs slightly on the numbers: Dainik Bhaskar cites eight arrested, while Times of India said three accused were named and seven others detained for questioning.

The attack has heightened tension in Ahirauli. Dainik Bhaskar reporters who visited the village on Wednesday described a quiet, uneasy atmosphere: streets were silent, many residents remained inside their homes and women were seen speaking in small groups indoors. Some villagers declined to comment, the report said.
Local investigators are probing whether the killing was an act of retaliation linked to the 2024 homicide of Aadesh Chaudhary, for which members of Tripathi’s extended family were reportedly accused. Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar accounts identify two brothers — named in the national report as Rahul and Rohit Chaudhary — as prime accused in the latest attack. The deceased’s family background was noted in reports: Tripathi’s son, Aditya, is an advocate practising at the Gorakhpur civil court.
Police presence has been maintained around the sealed houses both to prevent disturbance and to ensure the welfare of the animals abandoned at one property. Officers said they have been supplying food and water to the dog and the cow while the legal process continues.
The case remains under active investigation. Local residents and law-and-order officials said they expect further arrests or clarification of the sequence of events as forensic and witness inquiries proceed. Authorities have urged calm and asked anyone with information to approach the investigating officers.
