New fish hub to shift wholesale activity off main road
The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has awarded a contract to a private party to develop a 2.5-acre organised fish market near Press Chowk, officials said, in a move aimed at decongesting one of the city’s busiest stretches that sees heavy wholesale fish trade. The project is estimated to cost ₹2.5 crore and is expected to be completed within 10 months, the civic body said.
The civic administration identified the stretch from Khannagar Mata Mutt to Madhupatna via Press Chowk as the principal area affected by early-morning congestion, particularly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and from Fridays to Sundays when wholesale fish trading peaks. Fish-laden trucks currently queue along the carriageway and traders frequently begin unloading consignments on the road, narrowing lanes and impeding commuter movement.
"We aim to create the biggest and most organised fish market in Cuttack. The market, estimated to cost around Rs 2.5 crore, will be developed with dedicated spaces for wholesale and retail fish vendors, a truck bay and other essential amenities. The project is expected to be completed within 10 months," Mayor Subhash Singh said.
