A major new carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility has begun construction near Clive, Alta., with company officials declaring the Origins hub will be the largest permanent CO2 storage project in Canada when it enters service.
What’s being built and where
Enhance Energy held a groundbreaking event at the site just south of Clive, about 140 kilometres south of Edmonton, where crews have started installing a connecting pipeline intended to feed CO2 to the new storage hub.
Company executives say operations for the Origins project are slated to begin in January and that the hub will have an initial capacity to permanently store 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The federal government has compared that figure to removing roughly 500,000 cars from the road annually.
How Origins ties into regional infrastructure
The pipeline being built to the hub will link to the existing Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, a CO2 transportation system with a reported construction cost of $1.2 billion that Enhance Energy co-owns. The trunk line currently carries emissions captured from industrial sources, including a fertilizer plant in Redwater and the Sturgeon Refinery near Edmonton, to mature oil reservoirs in the region for permanent storage.
Enhance Energy has operated a CCS facility in the Clive area since 2020 and, according to the company, has permanently sequestered more than 9 million tonnes of CO2 to date. Executives say the Origins hub will provide an additional long-term storage option for emitters in the region and could be expanded as more sources and infrastructure connect.
"You can see behind me that we are breaking ground right this second on the connecting pipeline," said Candice Paton, vice-president of corporate affairs at Enhance Energy. "That will deliver CO2 for permanent storage to the Origins CCS hub."
Local and regional implications
The new hub represents a stepping stone for central Alberta’s industrial landscape. For emitters in the area — chemical plants, refineries and other heavy industrial operations — greater access to storage capacity could ease the logistical barriers to deploying capture systems.
From an economic perspective, construction and ongoing operations will generate local jobs and service contracts for drilling, pipeline and storage services. From an environmental regulation standpoint, having more storage capacity in the province strengthens Alberta’s position in the national conversation on emissions management and carbon-intense industry transitions.

As with past projects in Alberta, regulators and the company will need to demonstrate the integrity of the storage reservoirs and maintain transparent monitoring to retain public confidence.
