Emergency response north of the city
Roads north of Airdrie have reopened after firefighters responded to a serious early-morning blaze at a rural property Monday. Crews have since left the scene, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Airdrie Fire Chief Mike Pirie confirmed the roads were open again in a Facebook update and thanked motorists who were delayed or detoured during the response. The incident was reported at a property off Range Road 11 and 8 Street, an area where emergency crews needed room to work and where water had to be brought in to support suppression efforts.
According to a City of Airdrie news release, firefighters were dispatched at approximately 5:15 a.m. on Nov. 2 after several 911 calls described a building that was fully involved in fire. The structure appeared to be an abandoned residence, the city said. Firefighters arrived to significant fire conditions and worked to bring the blaze under control while also protecting nearby trees and grasslands.
“All roads have reopened, and firefighters have cleared the scene,” Airdrie Fire Chief Mike Pirie said in a Facebook update.
Neighbouring departments supplied water
The rural setting created an added operational challenge. Rocky View County Fire Services and the Town of Crossfield Fire Department helped move water to the property so Airdrie crews could continue firefighting operations. Their assistance was part of a co-ordinated response involving departments from neighbouring communities.
Earlier Monday morning, Pirie advised the public that Range Road 11 was closed while emergency vehicles and personnel were working at the property. The closure allowed crews to manage access around the fire and supported the movement of water and equipment. The roadway has now reopened, removing the immediate travel restriction reported during the response.

Investigation continues
The city has not identified a cause for the fire. With the building described as appearing abandoned, the investigation will determine what led to the blaze and whether any further work is required at the property. No additional details about the investigation were provided in the information released Monday.
The response also underscores the practical demands of fighting a fire outside the city’s built-up area. Crews had to contain intense fire conditions while preventing flames from reaching surrounding vegetation, and neighbouring departments were called on to help with water operations. Those details explain why the road was closed during the incident and why the response involved more than one fire service.
For Airdrie-area motorists, the immediate disruption has ended: roads are open and firefighters are no longer at the site. The investigation remains active, however, and the fire’s cause has not been determined. Further information will depend on what officials establish about the property and the circumstances leading to the morning emergency.
