Hamilton police say a 26-year-old man faces a charge of second-degree murder following the death of a 21-year-old who was found with stab wounds in the city’s west end early on Aug. 9.
Police outline sequence of events
Officers were called shortly after 2:30 a.m. to the intersection of Main Street West and Frid Street after a taxi driver located the injured man. The victim — later identified by police as 21-year-old Zenin Roussel — was transported to hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Investigators say Roussel and another man had been at King Street Billiards earlier that night. According to police, an argument took place outside the establishment after it closed; the cause of that dispute remains under investigation.
“We still have not determined what led to that altercation,”
Acting Det. Sgt. Lisa Chambers told reporters, adding that the two men left the area separately. Police say they believe the pair unexpectedly crossed paths again about 10 minutes later near Main and Frid, where the stabbing occurred.
Witnesses, vehicle search and evidence
Four people witnessed the assault; all have been identified and interviewed, police said. No weapon has been recovered, but investigators have seized a white SUV believed to be connected to the incident and executed a search warrant on the vehicle.
Officers are examining surveillance footage from the area and say they think the group involved left the scene heading east on Main Street and later moved toward Hamilton’s east end.

Community impact and family loss
Police described Roussel as a beloved family member whose death has deeply affected relatives. Chambers emphasised the human toll: the victim’s mother is grieving and must now explain to his younger sister why he did not return home.
“I shouldn’t be standing here today speaking about Zenin and his death,” Chambers said.
The homicide has added to community concerns about late-night violence in areas of the city where bars and social venues cluster. Residents and business owners near King Street and Main Street West have in recent years voiced worries about rowdy behaviour and safety after hours; this incident is likely to increase calls for stepped-up policing and improved safety measures in commercial corridors.
Next steps in the investigation
Police continue to analyse video evidence and follow leads related to the vehicle and those present that night. No motive has been confirmed, and investigators say there is no indication the suspect intentionally sought out Roussel earlier in the evening.
- Four witnesses have been interviewed by investigators.
- No weapon has been located; a white SUV has been seized and searched.
- Police are reviewing surveillance footage and pursuing additional leads.
The accused has been formally charged and the matter will proceed through the courts. Hamilton police are asking anyone with further information or footage from the Main Street West or King Street areas between the late hours of Aug. 8 and early Aug. 9 to come forward to assist the investigation.
This developing story affects Hamilton neighbourhoods where nightlife and residential life converge, underscoring tensions between late-night activity and community safety. Police say they will provide updates as new information becomes available.
