Network rebuts cancellation rumours
An ABC Entertainment spokesperson told Us Weekly that the rumours about the show's fate are “inaccurate” and that “any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative.” The clarification follows multiple media outlets reporting the programme would wrap after its 24th season, which premiered on ABC last week.
Why the talk of an ending?
Speculation intensified after entertainment outlet TMZ reported that Mr. Kimmel, who works under a year-to-year arrangement with ABC, has been developing other projects — including a podcast and additional shows — that could follow his time on late night. Industry chatter about a host’s off-air ambitions often fuels stories about a programme’s longevity, even when networks maintain there is no decision yet.
Context: controversy and a brief preemption
The series, which first aired in January 2003, has produced roughly 4,000 original episodes over more than two decades. Its recent history has been shaped by a politically charged episode in which ABC temporarily pulled the show from the schedule.
Executives described that interruption as an indefinite preemption following comments by Mr. Kimmel about the public discourse surrounding the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk was shot on Sept. 10, 2025, at an outdoor event on the campus of Utah Valley University and later died in hospital. The host’s monologue criticised President Donald Trump and members of the MAGA movement for what he saw as attempts to shift blame for the killing.
