Elukwatini, Mpumalanga — Two men appeared in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate's Court in Elukwatini on Thursday after police discovered a stripped Volkswagen Golf 5 that had been reported stolen in Gauteng.
Recovery followed community tip‑off, police say
Members of the Gert Sibande Highway Patrol received intelligence on Wednesday about a suspected stolen vehicle in the Elukwatini area and proceeded to Nhlazatshe No. 6, where they allegedly found a royal blue Volkswagen Golf 5 with much of its parts removed. The vehicle, police said, had been reported stolen in Dawn Park, Gauteng, earlier in August 2026.
Mpulmala Provincial Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the arrests of the two men at the scene. Both were charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and will remain before the court while investigations continue.
"We need a society that will not turn a blind eye when crime is committed, but will report it," said Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, who commended both the officers involved and the community members who provided information.
Additional immigration contravention added
Police said preliminary inquiries revealed that one of the men could not produce documentation required under the Immigration Act, and an additional charge was added to the docket. The stripped vehicle components were seized and will form part of the ongoing probe.
The case was postponed to 17 September for a formal bail application.
