A high-risk police operation in Mqanduli, OR Tambo District, on the evening of 26 August ended in a deadly exchange of gunfire when three armed men opened fire on members of the South African Police Service (SAPS). The three suspects were wounded by police and later certified dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services, SAPS said.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, the operation was carried out after follow-up intelligence on armed males in the area. Members from several units were deployed, including the Commander’s Recce Team, Mthatha Crime Intelligence, the Provincial Head Office Crime Intelligence and the OR Tambo Tactical Response Team.
Police reported they located a homestead in the Khovoti locality, Lucwecwe administrative area, and approached a house at the property. After announcing their presence the officers were met with gunfire from inside the dwelling and returned fire. All three suspects were wounded in the exchange. EMS attended the scene and declared the three adult males deceased.
“No SAPS members sustained any injuries,” said Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, who provided details of the operation and the exhibits recovered.
Weapons and exhibits recovered
Police recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Two of the firearms were pistols whose serial numbers had been filed off, the third was a shotgun without a serial number. Exhibits were processed by the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), SAPS said.

Investigations under way
Police said the identities of the three deceased — adult males aged between 40 and 46 from the Magutywa Location, KuTsolo — are known to investigators but have not been released. An inquest docket and a case of attack on police have been opened at Mqanduli SAPS to guide further inquiries.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) was called to the scene in accordance with prescribed procedures, SAPS confirmed. Ipid’s involvement is standard when deaths occur in encounters with the police and its presence ensures an independent probe into the circumstances of the shooting.
