An off-duty South African Police Service (SAPS) constable was abducted and robbed during an armed raid at a guesthouse on Buckingham Road, Mount Croix, Gqeberha, late on Monday night, 17 August. The incident — which left the officer traumatised but not physically injured — has prompted a joint inquiry by local police and private security investigators.

What happened

According to a SAPS statement from Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, three unknown suspects forced entry into the guesthouse at about 23:30 on 17 August. The assailants demanded that rooms be opened and searched tenants’ belongings after their initial attempts to obtain cash reportedly failed. Mawisa said the suspects took various items, including a television set.

“During the robbery the suspects demanded that all the rooms be opened and took tenant’s belongings and a television set,”

Fidelity ADT provided additional detail, saying the suspects were armed with two firearms and a knife and had threatened the receptionist before searching several rooms. The receptionist was forced to indicate where her room was; she led the suspects to the room in which the off-duty police constable was staying, apparently in the hope he could assist. The suspects then entered the room, tied and blindfolded the officer, took his belongings and bundled him into a blue Volkswagen Polo before driving off, Mawisa said.

Recovery and immediate response

Fidelity ADT reported that one of its patrolling officers, A. Masingili (S15), who was on Mount Road, noticed a man who appeared to be struggling to breathe at about 00:46. The man was identified as the abducted police constable and was found shortly before 01:00 on Mount Road, Fidelity ADT said. The officer did not have visible physical injuries but was described as shaken, traumatised and disorientated; his wallet had reportedly been stolen.

Mount Road SAPS attended the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Forensic personnel were also present, according to Fidelity ADT. Mawisa confirmed the member had since been released and was receiving the necessary support following the ordeal. She added that an investigative team had been assigned to the matter.

Local implications and questions

The incident raises immediate concerns about the security of transient accommodation in Gqeberha and the methods used by armed suspects to identify potential targets. That an on-duty private security patrol located the officer on a public road emphasises the role private-sector response services play alongside SAPS in urban safety.

  • Law-enforcement coordination: Mount Road SAPS has taken over the probe; forensic teams attended the scene.
  • Private security involvement: Fidelity ADT’s patrol officer located the abducted constable and provided initial on-scene support.
  • Community safety: The event underlines risks faced by guests and staff at small guesthouses, and calls for vigilance and improved security measures.

SAPS and Fidelity ADT remain the primary sources of the publicly available details. No arrests have been reported in statements released so far. The investigation is ongoing and Mount Road SAPS is leading enquiries into the robbery, abduction and theft.

Residents and guesthouse operators in Gqeberha are advised to review security arrangements, ensure staff know procedures for hostile incidents, and report any information relevant to the investigation to Mount Road SAPS.
