A man wanted in connection with a number of serious offences, including the murder of a police officer, was fatally shot during an intelligence-led operation by the SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Mqanduli on 17 October 2026, the police said on Sunday.

Operation, pursuit and shooting

Police said members traced the suspect to Mbulawa Location near Mqanduli and attempted to stop a white Toyota single‑cab bakkie in which he was allegedly travelling. According to the police account, the vehicle fled and a high‑speed pursuit ensued along the R411 towards Coffee Bay, ending when the bakkie slowed down in Mbulawa.

As Tactical Response Team members moved in, the suspect reportedly pointed a firearm at officers. The police statement said officers then fired and the man sustained fatal gunshot wounds; he was declared dead at the scene. No SAPS members were injured during the incident, police added.

"Fearing for their lives, members responded," police said.

Weapons, impoundment and investigations

During a post‑incident search, officers recovered an unlicensed AK‑47 assault rifle with its serial number filed off, the police said. The firearm was seized and will be subject to forensic examination as part of ongoing enquiries. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded.

Police described the deceased as being linked to several violent incidents in the area. Preliminary investigations have connected him to a murder in Thafalehashe and investigators regard him as a person of interest in the slaying of a police officer who was shot and killed at Eziko Tavern in Mqanduli.

The officer’s killing is being probed by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, the police said. Because the death occurred during a police operation, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as required by law.

Context and oversight

The use of lethal force by police triggers statutory oversight and criminal‑justice procedures. IPID’s involvement means an independent inquiry will assess whether the officers’ actions complied with constitutional and statutory standards for the use of force. The Hawks’ parallel investigation will focus on the suspect’s alleged involvement in other serious crimes, including the murder of a member of the SAPS.

Police said investigations into the recovered firearm and the suspect’s possible involvement in other violent incidents are continuing.

  • Date of operation: 17 October 2026
  • Location: Mbulawa Location, near Mqanduli, Eastern Cape
  • Unit involved: SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT)
  • Oversight bodies notified: IPID; Hawks handling related murder investigation
Item Detail
Recovered weapon Unlicensed AK‑47 (serial number filed off)
Vehicle White Toyota single‑cab bakkie (impounded)
Injuries No police injuries; suspect fatally wounded

The incident underscores continued concerns about armed criminality in parts of the Eastern Cape and the challenges law‑enforcement agencies face when confronting suspects alleged to possess military‑style firearms. The seizure of an AK‑47 with its serial number removed will be central to ballistics and tracing enquiries, which may reveal links to other violent incidents or organised networks if such evidence exists.

As investigations proceed, IPID’s findings will determine whether any administrative or criminal action is recommended against SAPS members involved. The Hawks’ inquiries into the murders remain separate and will address the criminal allegations against the deceased.

Police said investigations are ongoing and provided no further personal details about the deceased pending family notification and formal identification procedures.
