A 42‑year‑old man has been given a life sentence for murdering his partner on Christmas Day 2024, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu‑Natal said after the Scottburgh Regional Court delivered judgment.
How the killing unfolded
The NPA identified the convicted man as Sibusiso Philani Hlongwa. Hlongwa and the woman, who has not been named, were living together in the Mahlongwa area of Umkomaas. According to evidence presented in court, Hlongwa arrived home on the night of 25 December 2024 and asked the deceased to speak with him in an outbuilding. She agreed and followed him.
Family members told the court they heard the woman screaming at about midnight. When they went to investigate they found her bleeding heavily. She said Hlongwa had stabbed her and he had fled the scene. Paramedics were called but the woman was declared dead on arrival, the NPA reported.
Police, post‑mortem and arrest
The matter was reported to the police and Hlongwa was arrested the following day. The State led evidence from family members who discovered the deceased, the investigating officer and the doctor who carried out the post‑mortem. The post‑mortem report formed part of the State’s case.
State case and sentencing
Prosecutor Akhile Gcume guided the State’s presentation. Victim impact statements from two family members — compiled and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Nokukhanya Mkhize — were submitted to the court, describing how the family’s lives were altered and the trauma of witnessing the final moments.
“In their statements, the family members described how their lives had changed for the worse following the deceased’s death and the trauma of witnessing her final moments,”
The court found Hlongwa guilty of murder and imposed a life sentence. In addition to imprisonment, he has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Broader context and NPA response
The NPA reiterated that addressing gender‑based violence and femicide remains an organisational priority in KwaZulu‑Natal. It said it will continue to work with partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster to hold perpetrators to account.
“Together with our partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, we will continue working to ensure that perpetrators of these offences are held accountable,”
The sentencing is part of a sustained effort across the province to secure convictions in gender‑based violence cases and to support families through the court process.
Support and safety information for survivors
While this case concludes in court, survivors and families left behind by violence continue to need resources. Practical assistance in KZN is available through a range of civil society groups and government services. People in immediate danger should contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 10111 or use emergency services. The Department of Social Development, local NGOs and community organisations often provide counselling and support for victims and affected family members.
- Report domestic abuse to SAPS at your nearest police station or by calling 10111 for urgent matters.
- Seek medical attention immediately after an assault; preserve evidence where possible by not bathing and by seeing a doctor as soon as possible.
- Contact local victim‑support services or court preparation officers for guidance on court processes and victim impact statements.
This conviction will be closely watched by community members in the Upper South Coast and beyond, who emphasise prevention, quicker interventions and stronger support networks for victims of domestic violence. The decision at Scottburgh echoes ongoing calls across KwaZulu‑Natal for continued vigilance and prosecution of gender‑based crimes.
