A 35-year-old Free State man wanted on charges of trafficking in persons, kidnapping, rape and robbery was arrested at a house in Masilo, Theunissen over the weekend, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said on Monday.
Suspect traced by SOCI after information lead
The suspect, identified by the Hawks as Gregony Deck, had been sought in connection with alleged offences committed in Bloemfontein between 1 and 4 August 2026. Provincial Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Fikiswa Matoti said members of the Bloemfontein Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) received information on 7 August 2026 about his whereabouts in Theunissen.
Assisted by the Tactical Response Team, investigators acted on the tip and located Deck at a property in Masilo, where he was taken into custody. He is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 11 August 2026 on charges of trafficking in persons, rape, kidnapping and robbery, Matoti said.
“Members of the Bloemfontein Serious Organised Crime Investigation received information on Friday, August 7, 2026, regarding the whereabouts of the suspect in Theunissen,” Warrant Officer Fikiswa Matoti said.
Parole history noted by Hawks
Further investigation by the Hawks revealed that Deck had previously been released on parole on 28 July 2025 after a prior conviction for rape. The Hawks statement did not disclose details of the earlier case or the conditions of parole.
The arrest follows an investigation into alleged incidents in Bloemfontein over the first days of August. The matter will proceed through the magistrate’s court, where the charges will be formally read and the state will set out its case.
Context and policing response
The operation demonstrates co-ordination between investigative units and a tactical response capability within the Hawks’ provincial structures. Serious Organised Crime Investigation teams typically handle complex matters involving multiple suspects, cross-jurisdictional activity and organised-crime elements.
Local residents concerned about crime in the area often ask how such arrests translate to quieter streets. Arrests are an early phase of criminal justice: cases may take months to reach trial, depending on evidence gathering, witness availability and court schedules. The Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court will process the initial court appearance and set further dates.
Other recent arrests noted by authorities
In its statement the Hawks also referenced an unrelated incident in Gauteng in which police arrested three suspects following a house robbery in Rietfontein, Cullinan. Those suspects were traced and detained at Welbekend after co-operation between the SAPS and private security companies, the Hawks said.

Members of the public with information relevant to trafficking or violent-crime investigations are encouraged to contact the Hawks or their local police station. The Hawks routinely rely on community tips to locate suspects and dismantle criminal networks.
The legal process will determine whether the state can prove the alleged offences beyond reasonable doubt. Courts in the Free State have, in recent years, faced heavy caseloads that can delay matters; however, the early arrest is a necessary step towards accountability for the serious allegations now before the court.
Further details about the case, including charges sheet specifics and any bail application, will be disclosed in court documents or by the Hawks when appropriate.
