Suspects arrested after BP robbery escalates into shootout, chase and raid
Pretoria police have arrested four people following an armed robbery at a BP filling station that escalated into multiple exchanges of gunfire, a high-speed pursuit and a subsequent operation at a suspected safe house, SAPS said.
According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the incident began on 2 August when officers received information about an armed robbery in progress at the BP on Lavender Road. Backup was requested after suspects allegedly exchanged gunfire with members at the filling station.
Responding security members identified a white Volkswagen Polo believed to have been used by the suspects. A high-speed chase followed along the R566 towards Rosslyn, during which the fleeing occupants allegedly fired at pursuing officers. Security members returned fire and the Polo later crashed. One suspect was arrested at the crash scene, while three others reportedly fled on foot.
Information obtained after the initial arrest led the joint operational team to a suspected safe house, where police and security personnel said they were met with heavy gunfire from several occupants armed with rifles and handguns. Members entered the property and arrested another three suspects. Despite the exchanges of gunfire in both locations, police said no injuries were reported.
“We recovered an R5 rifle, ammunition, an ATM and a drop safe at the scene,” Captain Johan van Dyk said.
Items seized and links to other cases
SAPS reported a range of items seized in the operation. Those recoveries, said van Dyk, included an ATM and a drop safe allegedly taken during the robbery. Both were reportedly intact and had not been cut open.
- Weapons and ammunition: an R5 rifle, additional ammunition and a magazine
- Vehicles: three vehicles, including a white Volkswagen Polo and a white Suzuki Ertiga allegedly used in the incident; a white Ford Ranger reportedly sought in connection with a July case in Thembisa
- Other items: an undisclosed amount of cash, gloves, balaclavas, clothing and false registration plates
| Recovered item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| ATM | Found intact, not opened |
| Drop safe | Found intact |
| R5 rifle | Seized with ammunition and extra magazine |
| Vehicles | White VW Polo, white Suzuki Ertiga, white Ford Ranger |
The multidisciplinary operation involved members from Soshanguve SAPS, Pretoria units and other security teams, according to the police statement. Van Dyk said investigations remain ongoing as officers work to establish each suspect’s role and any wider criminal links.
Local impact and policing response
Incidents involving firearms and high-speed chases raise immediate safety concerns for residents and commuters in the affected corridors. The R566 and Rosslyn are busy routes that, when the chase occurred, would have had a mix of commercial and commuter traffic. Police did not report civilian injuries, but the use of firearms and fleeing suspects creates heightened risk in built-up areas.
Officers said they have linked one recovered vehicle to a separate matter in Thembisa from July, signalling potential broader criminal networks or vehicle use across provinces. SAPS emphasised the importance of community information in unravelling such operations and urged anyone with further details to make contact with investigators.
All arrested suspects remain in custody while investigations continue and the docket is prepared for possible charges. The matter will be processed through the relevant investigative and prosecutorial channels, the statement said.
Pretoria residents concerned about safety on arterial routes are likely to watch the outcome of this investigation closely, particularly if further links to other robberies or organised groups are confirmed. Police reiterated their commitment to follow up leads and to work with private security partners to reduce violent robberies targeting cash-handling sites.
