A 46‑year‑old man alleged to be responsible for numerous sexual assaults mainly in Cato Manor appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Police linked the suspect to a series of attacks spanning several years and said specialised units used DNA evidence and behavioural patterns to connect him to the incidents.
Charges and investigation
Police said the man is facing charges arising from alleged incidents of rape, housebreaking and attempted murder. Investigators reported similarities across cases and said DNA matched the suspect to attacks that may date back to 2014.
According to police statements, the suspect was linked to at least 14 alleged rapes in Cato Manor between 2014 and 2025 and to further incidents in the Pietermaritzburg area and uMgungundlovu District (Plessislaer and Taylor’s Halt). In some reports the total number of matters connected to the accused was given as 16, reflecting additional sexual‑assault matters recorded by investigators.
Police said specialised units were involved in the arrest, including teams from the Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation (SECI) and the Investigative Psychology Unit (IPU), both operating within the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

Investigators outlined a consistent modus operandi. The suspect allegedly targeted women mainly at night. In some matters he is said to have followed women from taverns to their homes; in others he allegedly forced entry into houses where women living alone were attacked at knifepoint.

Police also said victims were often unable to identify the attacker because he concealed his face, reportedly using pantyhose over his head in several incidents. Detectives said connecting the cases relied on establishing these behavioural patterns and linking biological evidence through DNA.
Court process and restrictions
The court ordered that the accused not be named because of the nature of the charges he faces. His matter was postponed to 28 September. The suspect remains in custody pending the next appearance.
Political and community response
KwaZulu‑Natal Premier Thami Ntuli issued a warning after the court appearance, urging a coordinated response from government, law enforcement and civil society to tackle gender‑based violence in the province.
“Our women are under siege, we have to up the ante and do more to protect all females from such acts of abuse and victimisation,”
Ntuli told the media he had also received reports of multiple gender‑based violence and femicide cases in other parts of the province and called for intensified awareness campaigns.
