A motorcyclist was airlifted to a Pietermaritzburg level one hospital after a serious collision on the N3 Durban-bound carriageway just before the Hammarsdale off-ramp on Friday morning, emergency services said.
Paramedics stabilised rider before helicopter transfer
ALS Paramedics from the Cato Ridge operation responded to the crash shortly after 10:30 on Friday, according to ALS spokesperson Garreth Jamieson. Paramedics found the rider lying in the roadway with serious injuries following a collision and stabilised him at the scene.
"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find the biker lying in the roadway, having suffered serious injuries after a collision," Jamieson said.
Given the severity of his injuries and the need for rapid transfer to higher-level care, the decision was taken to call in the Netcare911 Aeromedical Helicopter. The patient was loaded onto the helicopter and flown to a level one facility in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment.
Road closures and traffic impact
Authorities temporarily closed the N3 to create a safe landing zone for the helicopter. Traffic was severely affected and motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible while emergency services were on scene.

The N3 is a primary arterial route between Durban and the inland provinces, carrying significant commuter and freight traffic. Any closure can quickly create long delays and disruption for drivers heading into Pietermaritzburg and beyond. Local motorists and logistics operators should expect knock-on delays while investigations and scene clearance continue.
Advice for motorists
Motorists travelling between Durban and Pietermaritzburg this morning were urged to:
- Plan alternative routes where possible and allow extra travel time;
- Follow directions from traffic officers and emergency personnel at the scene;
- Keep emergency lanes clear to allow ambulances and response vehicles to pass.
ALS Paramedics declined to disclose the rider's identity or further medical details while family notifications were under way. The relevant authorities are conducting an investigation into the cause of the collision.
This incident follows other recent serious crashes on the N3 and highlights the continual pressure on emergency medical services and road-safety enforcement along this corridor. Residents in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas who rely on the N3 for work or deliveries should monitor traffic updates and radio bulletins for reopening times and diversions.
Further updates will be provided as authorities release more information about the crash and the condition of the rider.
