Carletonville, West Rand — A devastating late-night attack at Dora’s Tavern in Wedela, Carletonville, left 17 people dead and a further 15 injured on Saturday, Gauteng health and police authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred at about 21:30 on Hector Peterson Street, Extension 3, when a group of roughly eight armed men entered the tavern and opened fire on patrons inside and outside the premises, according to police and provincial briefings. Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) confirmed the death toll at the scene.

Two vehicles were set alight as the suspects fled in two unidentified cars, according to the initial reports.

Provincial government response
The Gauteng provincial government urged law enforcement agencies on Sunday to “urgently mobilise all available resources” to identify, arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice. The province welcomed the mobilisation of SAPS personnel and the involvement of other emergency and law enforcement roleplayers, including acting West Rand district commissioner Brigadier Happy Xaba, who attended the scene.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this senseless loss of life. There can be no justification for such an attack on innocent people. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and everyone affected by this horrific incident,”
The remark was attributed to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who expressed condolences to families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
What we know about the suspects and the scene
Authorities reported that the attackers were heavily armed and conducted searches of patrons before fleeing. Two vehicles were set alight as part of the getaway. No arrests or identifications were announced in the initial statements; investigators are examining ballistic, forensic and CCTV evidence and appealing to the public for information.

Community impact and next steps
The attack has sent shockwaves through Wedela and the broader Carletonville community on the West Rand, where residents expressed disbelief at the scale and brutality of the incident. Local health facilities are managing the influx of wounded, while police continue to canvass the area and gather evidence.
Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation and police appealed to anyone who was at the tavern, who may have footage on their phones, or who witnessed the suspects fleeing in two vehicles to come forward.
Further updates are expected as forensic results arrive and SAPS completes its forensic processing. In the meantime, Gauteng authorities have called for all available policing resources to be directed to the inquiry as they seek to bring those responsible to justice.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should contact their nearest SAPS station or the national crime line. Authorities urged people to avoid spreading unverified information.
