FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A suspect is in custody after three separate shootings and two attempted carjackings that occurred Sunday morning at multiple locations across Fayetteville, authorities said.
Morning incidents spanned city and county jurisdictions
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office first responded around 7 a.m. to the 700 block of Messenger Street after a 911 call reporting a shooting, officials said. Deputies arriving at that scene found a woman with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local medical facility and is reported to be in stable condition. Because that shooting occurred outside Fayetteville Police Department jurisdiction, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office led the initial response.
Minutes later, Fayetteville Police were summoned to the Hardee's parking lot in the 6300 block of Ramsey Street following an attempted carjacking and a shooting. Officers found another woman who had been shot. A short time after that call, officers responded to the Food Lion parking lot in the 900 block of McArthur Road for a separate attempted carjacking and shooting and found a third female shooting victim.
Both victims were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and are reported to be in stable condition.
According to officials, the male suspect fled the Fayetteville scenes before officers arrived. With assistance from the Fayetteville Police Department's Crime Information Center and information from witnesses, officers located and took the suspect into custody. The suspect is now being handled by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office while detectives continue their investigation.
Active scenes and public safety notices
Investigators are working at all three scenes. Authorities warned residents and motorists that people in the 900 block of McArthur Road and the 6300 block of Ramsey Street should expect a heavy law enforcement presence, and portions of those areas were shut down while detectives processed evidence.
