Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention Sunday morning, according to his attorney, Ruby Powers. Victor was a passenger in the vehicle when federal agents shot and killed his brother, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, during an encounter on July 7.
Victor was detained the same day as two other witnesses, Daniel Tirado Pantoja and Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego. “It’s just been so wonderful – a lot of different emotions when I first heard it might be happening,” Powers said. “So I first didn’t believe it, and then when I received an email from ICE that I knew it was real, so then it was about making sure he got out physically as soon as possible.”
Powers said she did not have a definitive explanation for what led to Victor’s release. “I don’t know what was the final thing that made it happen, but I don’t have a judge’s order or any definitive answer on what it was,” she told Houston Public Media.
