The Northern Nevada Dream Center will hold its eighth annual Back to School Bash Friday, Aug. 14, at Mills Park Pavilion in Carson City, continuing a community effort to ease the financial strain on families and equip children for the start of the school year.
Event aims and services
Organizers say the free event seeks to serve as many as 1,000 elementary students from Carson, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties, providing backpacks, school supplies and grocery assistance. The gathering will also connect families with local social services and offer health-related support such as vision screenings.
In addition to material giveaways, the Bash will feature family-friendly activities, from crafts to opportunities for children to meet first responders. Home Depot (North Carson) will lead a hands-on craft project, while the Carson City Fire Department will display equipment and allow families to explore firetrucks. School resource officers from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be present to greet students and parents prior to the first day of classes.
Community partners and resources
Multiple community organizations and government agencies will set up resource tables to share information and help families access support throughout the school year. Participants include Carson City Health and Human Services, NVigate, Greater Nevada Credit Union, NAMI, The Children’s Cabinet, CareSource and Nevada Urban Indians. The Carson City Lions Club is scheduled to provide vision screenings for children at the event.
Organizers emphasized that the Bash is designed not only to distribute supplies but to connect families with ongoing services that can remove barriers to student success.
“Every year, we see this community come together in an incredible way for local kids,” said Susan Sorenson, founder and executive director of the Northern Nevada Dream Center. “It takes all of us to make this happen, and we are grateful to every sponsor, partner, volunteer, and organization helping make sure children know their community is behind them.”
Logistics and incentives
The event begins at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Mills Park Pavilion. In addition to backpacks and supplies, families attending can receive groceries, enjoy summer treats and enter a raffle to win a $250 Grocery Outlet gift card.

Who is sponsoring and how to help
The Bash is supported by a coalition of corporations, faith groups and community volunteers. This year’s title sponsors include Carson City Toyota, Panasonic and LifePoint Church. Organizers said the event depends on donations and volunteers to collect supplies, assemble backpacks and staff resource stations.
- Free backpacks and school supplies for elementary students
- Grocery assistance and a chance to win a gift card
- Vision screenings provided by the Carson City Lions Club
- Resource tables from health, education and social service providers
For families facing higher costs for groceries, housing and everyday necessities, organizers say the Bash offers practical relief and a gateway to longer-term supports. Those interested in volunteering or donating items typically work through the Dream Center’s volunteer channels; organizers recommend contacting the Northern Nevada Dream Center directly for opportunities and drop-off details.
As students and families prepare for the coming school year, community leaders framed the event as part of a broader effort to ensure children start classes with basic supplies and access to essential services.
