After a week off to regroup, the University of Hawaii football program arrived in Laramie preparing for the altitude, the crowd and a renewed rivalry when it faces the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday.

Preparation for War Memorial’s environment

The Rainbow Warriors used practice time to simulate the noise and conditions they expect at War Memorial Stadium, where capacity approaches 29,000. Coaches have emphasized acclimating to the thinner air and the attention that comes with a regional rivalry game on the road.

Hawaii coach Timmy Chang noted the likely intensity of the setting and its potential effect on the visiting squad’s operations. He described the expected crowd and the team’s need to be ready for a loud, packed stadium.

"I think homecoming, I think it, it seats 29,000 in there and so, you know, anywhere between 22 to 29, it’s gonna make it pretty loud and so for us I think, we just gotta get ready for everything."

Injuries easing, veterans rejoin practice

Hawaii’s preparation was boosted by the return of several contributors who missed time earlier in the season. Running back Cam Barfield and defensive end Lesterlaisene Lagafuaina were back on the practice field, offering the staff more depth both offensively and on the defensive front.

Lagafuaina described the relief of being able to participate again and said he was looking forward to supporting his teammates from the sideline while regaining full playing form.

"I’m mostly excited to be with my boys, you know, being on the sideline cheering, that’s another way of adding value," Lagafuaina said. "I wanna add a lot more value on that field and just to be out there, it feels really great and a blessing."

Quarterback Micah Alejado also returned to full participation after spending part of last week in a sling on his right arm. He characterized the break as a moment to refocus ahead of a critical stretch of the season.

Rivalry and stakes: the Paniolo Trophy

The game carries the additional significance of being contested for the Paniolo Trophy. Hawaii holds the trophy after last season’s meeting in Honolulu, and both programs have framed the matchup as representative of their states.

Coach Chang highlighted the importance of competing for the hardware and the pride associated with the game.

Game details and viewing

Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Hawaii time. The contest will be televised on The CW, providing fans in both states the opportunity to follow the action live.

Wyoming fans should note the early local start for the matchup because of the time difference with Hawaii. Supporters traveling to Laramie can expect a homecoming atmosphere, while visitors from Hawaii will face both the elevation and a sizable crowd.

  • Hawaii enters the matchup following a bye week used for rest and preparation.
  • Multiple Hawaii players returned to practice, including Cam Barfield and Lesterlaisene Lagafuaina.
  • Micah Alejado practiced fully after a recent arm issue; the team is focused on a five-game stretch they hope to win.

Both teams will aim to take advantage of momentum early in the season and leverage returning personnel. For Wyoming, defending home turf and the Paniolo Trophy will be central themes during game week preparations.

Coverage on Saturday will bring local and visiting supporters the first glimpse of how Hawaii’s reinforcements translate on the field against a Cowboys squad playing before one of the state’s largest regular-season crowds.
