Traditional market expands offerings, hours as it enters fourth year

The Christkindl Markt at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market will return for its fourth year this holiday season, organizers announced, bringing more than 60 vendor stalls, expanded evening hours and a mix of returning favorites and new food and gift vendors. The market runs from Nov. 18 through Dec. 24 at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids.

Organizers said the event has become a regional draw. In 2025, the market attracted approximately 250,000 visitors from 49 of the 50 states, a figure market officials included in their announcement as evidence the festival has taken root as a holiday tradition in West Michigan.

"We've quickly established ourselves as a cherished holiday tradition," organizers said in a release. "Every detail is thoughtfully curated by a team working year-round to transport guests to a traditional European-inspired Christmas village in the heart of Grand Rapids."

What’s new for 2026

This year, the market will remain open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays — an extension aimed at accommodating evening visitors and increasing opportunities for downtown business activity. New food offerings announced for the season include porchetta sandwiches, chimney cakes, traditional German market-style mushrooms, novelty chocolates and farm-crafted vinegars.

On the gift side, the market’s vendor list features handcrafted and imported items including elaborate nutcrackers, mechanical wooden puzzles, pottery, alpaca goods and unique glass ornaments, among dozens of other items. Organizers highlighted both returning vendors and several additions that broaden the market’s mix of local and traditional European fare.

  • Vendor total: more than 60 stalls, including both permanent and pop-up vendors
  • New food items: porchetta sandwiches, chimney cakes, German-style mushrooms
  • Extended hours: open until 9 p.m. on Thurs.–Sat.
  • Special experiences: private Alpenglobe reservations and curling reservations with beverage pre-orders

Vendors, experiences and guest options

The market’s 2026 lineup spans a wide range of categories, from traditional German options like the Wurst Haus and Schnitzel Haus to locally produced goods from vendors such as Big Bear Honey, Field & Fire and 10 Acre Farm. Returning favorites include Baabaazuzu, Brewery Vivant, Casa de Churros and The Nutcracker Haus. Organizers also announced eight pop-up vendors this year, naming Aunty B's Pantry, Checker Pop Candy Shop and Delger Family Farm among them.

Beyond shopping and eating, the market continues to offer signature paid experiences. Reservations are available for the Alpenglobe — private, heated, enclosed globes that seat up to eight people for three-hour reservations with panoramic views of the market and exclusive pre-order options for food and beverages. Curling reservations also remain an option, now with new beverage pre-order capabilities for groups looking to add an activity element to their visit.

Local implications and what to expect

For Grand Rapids residents, the market’s return brings a mix of seasonal commerce, tourism-driven activity and additional foot traffic in the downtown core across the holiday season. The later weekend hours could affect nearby restaurants and retail businesses, potentially extending peak shopping and dining times. Organizers encourage visitors to plan ahead for special reservations like the Alpenglobe and to consult the market’s official vendor list and schedule for up-to-date information on featured vendors and events.

Full vendor listings, reservation details for the Alpenglobe and curling, and any updates to market programming are available from the Grand Rapids Downtown Market’s official channels. Organizers noted they curate the market year-round to recreate a European-inspired holiday village experience in the heart of Grand Rapids.
