ATHENS — The University of Georgia left its season opener largely without major new medical concerns, coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday, after the Bulldogs rolled to a 63-3 victory and were able to limit the workload of several regulars.
Coaches limited snaps for veterans
Smart emphasized that Georgia didn’t need to stretch key contributors in the blowout, allowing a number of players to log modest minutes and giving younger players opportunities to contribute. One of the clearer illustrations was center Drew Bobo, who made his first start since sustaining a foot injury against Georgia Tech last season.
Bobo was on the field for the opening phase of the game, appearing for the first five series before being removed as the Bulldogs built a lopsided lead. Smart assessed Bobo’s outing positively within the limited action.
“Thought he did a good job,” Smart said of Bobo. “Did what was asked of him. He makes good checks, and he commands the huddle. He’s a high-effort guy. He didn’t play a ton of snaps. So, he did a good job.”
Week-to-week and longer-term injuries
Not all roster absences were related to Saturday’s game plan. Outside linebacker Chase Linton was not in uniform as he works through a lower-body injury. Smart described Linton’s status as week-to-week, indicating a short-term recovery timeline but no firm return date.
The Bulldogs also remain without Amaris Williams, who has been out since suffering an ACL tear in April.
Freshmen seizing the moment
With Linton sidelined, younger players received added opportunities. Freshmen Khamari Brooks and PJ Dean stepped into expanded roles; Dean recorded 1.5 sacks in the opener, a sign of depth paying dividends early in the season.
- Drew Bobo — started, played first five series, pulled early
- Chase Linton — out, lower-body injury, week-to-week
- Amaris Williams — out with ACL injury from April
- PJ Dean — freshman, tallied 1.5 sacks
- Khamari Brooks — freshman, received added playing time
Secondary availability and legal matters
Defensive back Ja’Marley Riddle did not play in the opener, but Smart clarified the absence was not due to an immediate health issue. Riddle has been limited previously because of a lingering groin injury that dates back to his time at East Carolina.
Riddle was also involved in a legal matter earlier this year: he was arrested in May on two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor speeding charge. Those charges were later dropped by the Brunswick district attorney’s office, according to the report.
Serious offseason injury update
Running back Dante Dowdell remains sidelined after suffering serious injuries in an off-season ATV accident. Smart praised the Georgia medical staff and their communication with Dowdell’s family and external specialists handling his care, signaling ongoing attention but offering no timeline for his return.
| Player | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Drew Bobo | Returned to start | Five series, then removed |
| Chase Linton | Inactive | Lower-body injury, week-to-week |

| Dante Dowdell | Out | Serious ATV accident injuries |
What it means for the season
The comfortable margin in Athens allowed Georgia to protect veterans and evaluate depth without enduring heavy contact or extended snap counts for starters. That approach should preserve health for upcoming conference play while providing valuable live-game experience for younger players who may be needed as the season progresses.
Smart’s postgame and Tuesday comments underline a cautious approach to player management early in the season — balancing the desire to win convincingly with the need to keep players healthy for the schedule ahead.
