CLEARFIELD COUNTY — A 37-year-old man has been formally charged with an extraordinary number of criminal counts after authorities say he groomed and repeatedly assaulted a minor over several years.

Charges, timeline and allegations

Court records show Nicholas Allen Spencer faces 5,538 separate criminal charges, including just under 4,000 felonies. The charges range from child pornography offenses to multiple counts of rape and related sexual-assault charges, according to the complaint reviewed by WTAJ.

Prosecutors allege Spencer began sending inappropriate messages to the victim when she was about 12 years old, telling her he “wanted her” and that he would like to “grab her.” The victim later told investigators she believed the sexual assaults began when she was about 13 and continued "almost daily" over the course of several years, the complaint said.

The victim ultimately reported the conduct after a friend encouraged her to come forward. It was not publicly specified how old the victim was at the time she made the report.

“I think the child is entitled to have this man be held accountable for each and every charge,” said Tami Fees, deputy district attorney for Clearfield County.

Scope of the indictments

According to the charging documents, the counts include more than 300 counts each of:

  • Rape by forcible compulsion
  • Rape by threat of forcible compulsion
  • Statutory sexual assault
  • Other related sexual-offense charges

Prosecutors also filed dozens of counts related to child pornography and distribution of obscene material involving a minor — with the complaint noting 42 counts of each of six different charges tied to those allegations.

Prosecutorial approach and legal implications

Deputy District Attorney Tami Fees told reporters that the number of counts reflects what she described as one charge for every alleged incident. Fees said not every charge may ultimately proceed to trial, but that the office’s intent is to seek a sentence that would keep the defendant in custody for life.

When investigators confronted Spencer about recent explicit messages, the complaint states he said he did not remember sending them, despite evidence the messages had been sent roughly eight hours earlier.

What this means for the community

The scale of the allegations and the severity of the charges have prompted attention in Clearfield County and beyond. Cases involving prolonged abuse of a minor typically require detailed forensic review of digital evidence, witness interviews and careful coordination between law enforcement and prosecutors. Victim witnesses in such cases also often are provided with services through victim-witness programs and may receive counseling and protective measures.

Item Alleged total
Total charges filed 5,538
Felony counts (approx.) just under 4,000
Counts of certain rape-related offenses 300+ each (multiple categories)
Child-pornography-related counts 42 counts of each of six charges

Next steps in the case

As with any criminal prosecution, charges are allegations that must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court. Prosecutors indicated they may not proceed on every count at trial but are framing the filings to reflect the breadth of alleged conduct and to preserve options as the case moves toward pretrial proceedings and potential trial.

Legal experts say very large indictments can be the product of prosecutors charging each discrete event separately, particularly when digital records — such as messages, images or logs — appear to document multiple instances. Defense counsel have avenues to challenge counts, seek consolidation, or pursue dismissal of specific charges during pretrial litigation.

At this stage, court records and the prosecutor’s statements form the public record; no trial date was disclosed in the complaint materials reviewed by WTAJ. Spencer resides in Clearfield County and is charged in that jurisdiction.

Community members with concerns about child abuse or who need information on victim resources can contact local law enforcement or county victim-witness services for guidance.
